WJ - 42RE Pb 3rd gear

Hi !

I'm French, so I apologize in advance for any mistakes.

I have a WJ 4.0L, of 2000, with 270 000km, so approximately 168 000 miles.

I change the gearbox output speed sensor, it fixed the problem of the second gear : if I stop the engine, I have to do 1 mile before it shifts to the second gear (the engine is coasting when the 2 must shift). Yeah ! A problem less!

But now, the third gear shifts difficult...
After stopping for a few hours, shifting the third gear is very difficult (like the 2d gear problem, the engine is coasting when the 3 must shift). I have to do 2 miles before it shifts the third gear. The other gears are OK (1, 2, 4 and reverse).
After that the third gear was shifted, it will gradually become better. So I feel a shake each time the tranny shifts the 2 to 3, until no longer feel anything after 10 miles.
After 13miles, the 3rd shifts perfectly. I can stop the engine some minutes, and start and go without the problem of the third.

I have flushed the tranny, changed the filter, and the level is OK with ATF+4.
I really do not know what can make this problem. Solenoid and Pressure sensor ?

Thank for your help.
Cedric

Did you change BOTH filters? The 45RFE transmission has a flat filter AND a spin on filter. If you flushed and didn't change the spin on, it could be partially plugged causing these problems.

He has the 42RE transmission. I would first check the rigging of the throttle valve cable. (see attached procedure).

Hi,

I have checked the cable, and the delayed shift 2-3 is not fix.

Someone told me that this may be a leak of internal pressure.
