WJ Drivers Window Inop

I have a 2000 WJ Laredo with the 4.7L. It's been a great vehicle, I bought it new in Nov '99 and have had very few problems over its 175,000 miles. I came back from being out of town for the week last night and headed out of the airport parking lot. When I went to put the drivers window down to pay the parking lot fee, the window wouldn't go down.

Clearly it was frozen as the weather in Denver had been pretty frigid. Of course this has happened in the past with no issues, once it thawed it would work fine. This time, no go. There was a little louder clunk that happened the first time I pressed the down button.

So now, there is a noise I assume is the motor and the glass moves just a little bit, but then just a whirring motor noise and no movement up or down. It seems something broke and I'm in the process of reviewing the manual and will pull off the door panel when it warms up next week some time.

I'm just wondering if anyone has experienced the same issue and if it sounds more like the motor assembly or the window regulator.

Thanks.

Re: WJ Drivers Window Inop

I had a similar issue before joining the forum, and helped another user who had the same issue. He did a write up on replacing the regulator/motor (they are one unit) in the how to/DIY section. There is a link to a very helpful youtube video i there too. Here is a link to the thread.

How to replace a power window motor and regulator

Re: WJ Drivers Window Inop

It probably is your window regulator. I recently replaced two ( driver side front and passenger side rear) in my 2002 G.C. Laredo.
Jeep is notorious for bad window regulators.
In less than five months the front went out again. So I'm waiting for warmer weather here in PA to replace it again.
Called the supply house yesterday and they are sending me another because they are still covered under warranty.
When you buy a replacement, be sure to get it from a reputable manufacturer. Don't make the mistake I made and buy the cheapo brand. Even though they may have a one year warranty, you don't want to replace them every six months.

OK. Thanks. Looks like I'll be tackling this when it warms up, looks like an easy job. NAPA carries an aftermarket replacement, so I'll probably go with that.

It's a jeep problem. I've replaced 5 in 3 years. Buy them off ebay if you can. It doesn't matter if you buy the $30 one or the $80 one they all break the same. It's in the design. Those plastic guides and holders bust just like any other. Unless you find an all metal design.

once you've done it, it's only a 20 min job.
