Wj front diff rebuild help

I have a 2002 JGCL with QD.

My front diff started sounding like bad roller bearings about 30k miles ago. At this point it is getting too loud to ignore.

The diff only makes noise on decel. It also makes the noise all the time when the front drive shaft is removed. I'm not sure what the means but I suspect the pinion bearing. I pulled the diff cover and checked out the ring and pinion gears and they look fine but the fluid was glitter filled so I suspect every bearing inside the diff is now junk.

I've had the truck to two dealers. Neither want to touch the rebuild because they cannot be certain what the cause of the noise is. One suspected the plenum whatever that does.

My real questions follow:
1. Dana 30 rebuild kits can be sourced all over even ebay. But what parts will I really need?
2. I understand that adjusting the diff takes an expert but I don't really have a local expert as even the dealer is recommending I get an unknown condition junk yard axle and have them install that.
3. Has anyone else had this problem and what did you pay for labor or how long did it take to repair?

Re: Wj front diff rebuild help

I would go the junkyard route....but be careful and use a reputable yard like LKQ. Also go for the newest model, lowest mile part available....

Re: Wj front diff rebuild help

But then I get only a 90 day warranty ..... and it'll still cost over a grand start to finish.

Re: Wj front diff rebuild help

What is a quadra drive front axle?

I did some junk yard searching and around here they only have high mileage stuff. I almost think are rebuild is the best option.

There must be a shop in your area that works on 4x4 suspensions if you feel you do not have the expertise to do it yourself. I know in my area there are a few with good reputations. I'm in SOCAL.

Re: Wj front diff rebuild help

The Quadra drive front axle has a build in Vari-Lok differencial. That one can transfer the torque to the other wheel when one side begins to spin.

Re: Wj front diff rebuild help

Well.... the rebuild is complete.

I purchased my parts from http://www.ringpinion.com/ and had tranny repair shop with good reputation perform the rebuild.

The labor cost me $400 and parts/fluid ran $200. The jeep is dead quiet again!!!

Re: Wj front diff rebuild help

Stay away from a 99 Dana axle. Those were crap! The dealer had to rebuild mine 3 times when I purchased the Jeep new in 99.

Re: Wj front diff rebuild help

Well I did entertain the idea of going used ..... but these days most available axles are high mileage and end up costing fortune just to ship. I saw no reason to run the risk when I knew all I needed were some new bearings.

Sounds like I have the exact same problem. There is fluid leaking out of my front differential where it connects to the front drive shaft. I also have a very loud vibration/hum when on the highway, ONLY when coasting. There is also a clicking when turning at low speeds - I have replaced both CVs and it did not make a difference.

I am pretty certain it's the front pinion bearing. Do you have any idea of the labor involved in this replacement?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
