WJ Jeep, Sounds like differental is clunking

I just bought my 1999 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.7l four months ago. I'm getting a strange clunking/grinding noise, it's very bipolar too. When I turn real sharp and hit the brakes I get a lovely scraping noise ever now and then, not all the time though. When I'm driving I get a strange mild vibrating humming noise all the time and gets louder the faster I go. I also get a clunking/grinding noise sounding like its coming from the front differential. It occurs mostly when I first start my car and brake for a stop, but once my car warms up it usually goes away. But it can occur randomly when I'm driving and will last till I let the car sit for a while. I let someone take a look at it a while ago and he said it was the wheel bearings were bad and the cv axle was bad, so I replaced both wheel bearings and front right cv axle. Nothing changed besides a little smoother car ride but noise is exactly the same. And also when the tires slip like in wet rain/snow the car will shake real bad. Please someone shine the light on the problem before I give up on my jeep!!!

Re: WJ Jeep, Sounds like differental is clunking

Did you check the fluid level in the front differential and did you take a fluid sample after driving to check for any metal in the fluid?
Also check the front propeller shaft joints (CV or U-joints) for play and check the T-case fluid level and a fluid sample.
If you didnīt change the fluid yet, i would start there, so that you can have a look inside the diff for any damage to ring gear and/or pinion. Could be diff bearing for the humming sound, but clunking is something else.

I have not yet checked any fluids yet due to it being so cold outside ha, but I'll suck it up for the jeep. I'll check and change diff fluid first thing friday(gotta wait for my paycheck), same with the t-case. By the way I'm only 18 and am not an expert yet but I got my trusty youtube and hours of searching online ha. Also doing Mopar Cap in a dew months. So just about everything is a learning curve ha. But I'll check everything you said and let you know how it's going. Hope for something cheap ha

Re: WJ Jeep, Sounds like differental is clunking

If your jeep is quadra drive, then it will need limited slip additive in the diff fluid. If it is quadra tracII then no additive is needed.
75W140 for the diffs and special mopar fluid for the NV 247 T-case (which is Mobil 424 fluid). (check first which T-case you have)
The diffs have no drain plugs, so you have to remove the whole cover. When closing it you need to apply a beat of RTV.
The T-case has a fill and drain plug. First remove the fill plug and then the drain plug. The reason for this is that they can be rotten in place and when unable to remove the fill plug, you can not fill it anymore.
Both diffs and T-case should be filled until the fluid starts to overflow from the fill opening.

Re: WJ Jeep, Sounds like differental is clunking

Hey! I'm new to forums, long time reader first time responder. I have an 02 WJ Laredo 4.0L with SelecTrac with the same sounding problem from the front diff area also. I have a mild 2" lift and running 265/70/16 tires, roughly 30.5" diameter with MB Chaos 16" rims. It never even made a noise or any problems before but after driving on the trails in 4wd Full time for about an hour and a half in some serious mud from all the rain. It made the clunking noise pretty severely then I selected 2wd again, it slowly went away and didn't come back. But when I re-engage 4wd it isn't there until I apply brakes. I wonder if its a shift of components in the forward axle or the driveshaft ? Anyone else with this issue? Thanks!

Re: WJ Jeep, Sounds like differental is clunking

I have finally found the problem. I was rolling around on a creeper just the other day with the jeep on some ramps. I found that the transfer case end of my front driveshaft the boot was torn. Inside of the joint is absolutely no grease but alot rust. So pulled the driveshaft and driving perfect now. But I need some help on how to replace the cv joint. Thanks

Ok. I havent pulled off the front diff cover yet. But when I crawled under it wiggled the front drive shaft it had a lot of play on the transfer case end. Also... that scraping sound on the 4.7 quadra drive might just be your brakes My rear ones started to go and it sounded horrible.
