Wj power steering fluid wj overland 2004

Hi guys Does the Ac Delco power steering fluid works good on the overland steering sytem,the steering system is running now on the ATF and their is groaning noise when turning ,I hope that the pump will not disrupted and I feel that the hydraulic fan run slowly on idle

I believe the Hydraulic fan system required special fluid. ATF is to aggressive on the seals and such.

The factory fill power steering fluid for all 1999-2004 Grand Cherokees is a unique fluid, MS5931. ATF+4 (MS9602) should not be mixed or used as a “topping off” fluid on the Grand Cherokee WJ. All WJ models should be serviced using ONLY the special MS5931 fluid. ATF+4 is NOT an approved Power Steering Fluid and should never be used under any circumstances. Note that all fluids will darken in color with usage and fluid color is no longer an indication of fluid condition.

Indeed the fan is driven by the power steering pump on your Overland. Definitely use the correct fluid. Also, a flush and fill would be a good thing to prolong the life of that pump. I just changed one on my '04 Columbia Edition with the 4.7HO and it is a time-consuming pain in the @xx to replace.

thanks guys their is some sound from the fan when it ran so fast when the temperature exceed 220,am wondering on idle the temperature exceed 220 especially when i drive in very low speed with tough steering and normal temperature on high way,i hope change the fluid will give us a good change.

220 on a 4.7HO you sir are going to start saving now. the 4.7 does not take kindly to being overheated. operating temp is 210 the fan is supposed to kick High on at 215 i believe? have you checked the thermostat?
you could have air in your coolant system also.

Does your also have the Electric fan? the relay could be bad on that because that's supposed to kick on at 215 if you have it

the Hydraulic fan is also one Expensive! piece also like $500+ and getting rarer to find.


In all seriousness watch the temp on the 4.7 she has aluminum heads.

she isn't like the all iron 4.0L furnace.

Thanks my friend their is no cooling loose on high way the temperature is below 200.when the temperature reach 200 the fan doesn't engage and run on low speed,no electric fan on overland just an hydraulic fan for cooling.I feel that the temperature rise up on very low rpm when I rotate the steering wheel,bad fluid on power steering make the pump and hydro fan work.I will flash and change the fluid with the moper I hope their will be some change,what is the symptoms have air in cooling system.

You first have to fill the cooling system with the bleed plug from the upper hose removed until coolant flows out. Then reinstall the plug and continue filling until radiator is full. Now start the engine and let it warm up until thermostat opens. Any air will normally go to the highest point, which is the radiator fill neck. The next heat up cycles this air will be pushed to the overflow reservoir and when cooling down coolant from the overflow reservoir will be drawn back to the radiator. Keep an eye on the overflow reservoir the first few days and keep the level full.

Thanks frank good info,what is the The modus operandi hydraulic fan on overland the temperate reach 200 and the fan doesn't engage or ran at all

If you unplug the temperature sending unit by the thermostat it will force the fan into the default "full on" mode. That is a way to test the fan. If the fan does not speed up then you have an expensive problem...

The temp sending unit sends the signal to the PCM which controls the fan. If the signal is there and within in a set range it will not speed up. Unplugging it forces it into the default "safe mode" which is full speed. There is a hydraulic valve in the fan that controls the fan. I will dig up some more info i get a chance.

This bit is more on an FYI --> The 4.7 (and most modern engines) have a cast iron block and aluminum heads. These two metals expand at different rate. Aluminum does not handle the heat as well as the cast iron. One of the problems with the HO engines is dropping a valve seat after the engine was overheated and repaired. Sometimes it happens shortly after the repair, other times it is years later. Either way it usually ends up with some sort of valve/piston contact and significant damage.
