WJ won't turn over. Tried and checked...

02 JGC with 90,000 kms. yes - Canadian.
4.7 HO Overland Edition
It stopped on me at the gas station as I went for a coffee, I turned it off and it would not start again. No codes, cycled key and says 'done' right away. Engine light is on, stays on but when key is turned to start position it flashes 11 times and then the 12th time stays on solid. Still no codes.
Has anyone heard of this? I tried going back and looking in previous posts but have decided to just ask before my eyes start to bleed.
Frank? Can ya help a poor lost Canadian boy get a grip on this?

Re: WJ won't turn over. Tried and checked...

Welcome to the garage Charlie.
Just to be sure, it cranks normally when you want to start it, right?
Did you check if you can hear the fuel pump running for three seconds when switching the ignition to run? The noise level is quite low. But with a failing pump, i would expect the engine to start and shut down, since there should be still some fuel pressure left in the rail.
I would also check the fuses in the Power Distribution Center (PDC, under the hood), 6, 19, 24 and 26 and on the Junction Block under the steering wheel area fuse 12. If all these are ok, i would (only for trouble shooting purposes) swap the Auto Shutdown Relay with the Transmission Control Relay. Both are in the PDC.
Let me know what you find, then we can go from there.

Re: WJ won't turn over. Tried and checked...

Hi and thanks for the prompt reply.
I have checked all fuses, as in all, including #12 which isn't named under dash.
And it doesn't make it to a fuel issue as it won't turn over, no codes and when in start mode then realeased to run mode, the engine light flashes 11 times and on the 12th it stays on.
battery is new, connections are good and free of corrosion, and I tried boosting from power pack and get same result. can it be a catalytic converter issue and need a tow to the dealer? don't like going to dealers as I am not so trusting and they generally come back with more issues the they left with.

Re: WJ won't turn over. Tried and checked...

Ok, i think that i misunderstood you. It will not crank at all when you switch the ignition to start. Do you hear a light click under the hood when you try to start? The starter relay, which is also in the PDC, should give a light click. If it does, then the problem is or the starter motor, or bad contact. If you switch the headlights on when trying to start, will they dimm? The flashing "check engine" light is normal with engine off. If it starts flashing with engine running, then its not normal. (misfire)
If the starter relay doesn´t click, then the problem can be the relay (swap it with the horn relay), or the neutral safety switch inside the transmission. Moving the shifter lever or trying to start it in N could help.

Re: WJ won't turn over. Tried and checked...

Awesome, so, yes I get the click and no, I haven't checked the starter or the connection. I will be off work soon and will give it a look and a rubber mallet tapperooo, before I pull and old school bench test it. really thought that flashing engine light was trying to say something? I guess no codes means no codes....
will be disappointed I used a tow truck if all I needed to do was tap the starter, but will check that next. Thanks.

Re: WJ won't turn over. Tried and checked...

Did you try to start with headlights on? Even new batteries can go bad or not charge. A bad ground wire could also ruin your day. If you try to start and the headlights go dimm, then you will have to check the battery voltage first. And there are some cases known, where corrosion at the main wires, where they connect to the terminal connectors, caused no start condition. This problem will only be found when peeling back the wire isolation close to the terminals.

Re: WJ won't turn over. Tried and checked...

Ok, so my problem was the starter, or more specifically the wire to tab weld connection on what I assume is the ground. Swapped starter with a spare and been driving it ever since. Which is why it has taken so long to respond, haha, my ass is happiest when being hugged by my overland. That flashing engine light is what stalled my normal trouble shooting order of elimination, although I feel a little dumb, I am glad it brought me here. It is a joy to see all the awesome Jeeps out there and to dream of all the advances I can add to my fleet. Thanks Frank, and to all for your participation.
