Worth it? 99 WJ LTD V8 98,000miles

Hey guys,

Recently picked up a 99 WJ ltd v8 with about 98,000 miles 2,000 of which are from me. Got front and rear brake pads/rotors done along with new sparkplugs. The jeep has a humm/whurr coming from the rear diff(Dana 44) at 45+ mph and I have been quoted $600-700 to replace the rear carrier bearing and up to 1200 for another shop to replace the whole rear axle, diff, seals and pretty much the whole rear end. (For 1200). I still need to put a good $500 into it for tires before our Michigan winter but I was more wondering if sinking any amount of money into the jeep would be worth it. I have had it for sale on Craigslist and have been low balled a few times so I am leaning toward putting some money into it before winter and possibly having a decent vehicle worth $3500+. Looking for some opinions from people who I'm sure have owned jeeps much longer than I.

Thanks all

Joe

Bring it to a shop that knows what a differential is. If a shop wants to replace the entire thing, it's because they don't know how to take it apart. If it's just a carrier bearing you are looking at about 2 hours labor in reality plus the bearing/race, small parts. To replace it with a used, you'll likely have the same issue soon. Also, while you are at it check the front prop shaft. It's a known problem part and may be worth fixing before winter if it's leaking. The part # is P52099498AB. Good luck!

Re: Worth it? 99 WJ LTD V8 98,000miles

That's actually what I inadvertently did. I had taken it to a trans shop originally and was quoted 6-$700 for the rear carrier bearing. Then for a "2nd opinion" I took it back to the place that already had me for $200 on the rear pinion seal and diff fluid replace and they said the work they did was good but I also needed the carrier bearing done. They wanted to "do it right" and replace the whole rear end for the 1100 to 1700. (refurbish, and reman)

You were spot on with that.
Thanks for the response

I also have a ratchet/chain sound that appears when I let off the gas going 30+ mph and is pretty prominent when I coast down a hill. Sounds like its coming from the transfer case but I honestly wouldn't know. It only appears when I let off the gas, once there is a load the sound disappears.

Welcome to the garage.
Have a look at the T case fluid. The original fluid (mobil 424) is thin and clear, see if there is any metal in it or if the color changed to something greyish. A too far stretched chain in the T case can hit the housing and cause noises. Also it can start skipping teeth when more torque is put on it and make a ratcheting noise.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys!

I was thinking T-case all along for the chain sound as well. I don't like to hope for things to be wrong but when I do i like to hope that I "know" what it is...

Oh yeah, and how do I check the fluid without taking off the case? Will I be drenched in transfer fluid if I remove the drain bolt?

Re: Worth it? 99 WJ LTD V8 98,000miles

I purchased my 02 wj for 500$ but sinked easily 3k into it. I tried reselling no bueno. No one wants to pay for a wj anymore. They used to be worth something, but now a measly 1g buys a wj even a beat to shit overland

Re: Worth it? 99 WJ LTD V8 98,000miles

bought my 99 Limited with 178k miles for $2000 already had a Rough Country 4" lift Not my choice of lift companies but was already done so saved me time.

and already had the 242HD swap done!

it has Horrid rocker cancer but inside everything works Blend doors were replaced etc etc.

I ended up putting $1500 into afterwards fixing odds and ends.

Had no adjustable upper control arms. Put a Carolina DriveShaft in because stock was shot. No adjustable Trac'bar and was missing a rear Sway bar or endlinks.

Just recently had the rear caliper lock up. So i replaced all the Calipers with Power stop brake kit and upgraded to the akebono kit. $500 not bad
