2001 WJ V8 Starter Motor Removal

Hi Folks,

This morning the starter decided not to play ball any more. I've checked all the easy options and it does appear dead. I'll be getting the replacement tomorrow.

I've been under the car and undone the mounting bolts and the electrical connections.

My worry is that is it really possible to jiggle the old one out in the limited space or do other parts need disconnecting?

I've watched a few online videos but it does seem really tight especially with the brake lines and tranny lines.

Cheers

Paul.

You can remove the starter without removing anything else. The space indeed is limited, but moving it aft and turning it a bit will create the necessary space.
I just put a new starter solenoid on mine a few months ago, together with new brushes, eventhough the later where not worn that far yet. A bit more work, but a lot cheaper (especially for me, since shipping costs and import duties more then double the price).

Many thanks my friend - my hands are cut to pieces trying to get the nuts off!!!!!

I've left it handing on the bolts until I get the new part so it should be a quicker swap out.

Time for a beer now - You've made me happier that I don't have to do any major surgery.

Cheers !!!!!

Paul.

I've also read that it makes life a little easier if you jack the left side of the car up so that there's a bit more space between the cat and the suspension arm.

Can anyone confirm this please?

Cheers

Paul.

Jacking up left side? Not right side? I did it standing on the ground and it came out without too much trouble.

Re: 2001 WJ V8 Starter Motor Removal

Glad to say I had a successful time in swapping it out.

I did jack up the right side chassis but that was to really give me a bit more room sliding in and out as I had to do it on a grassy driveway.

There are a few videos regarding this repair which I would suggest viewing a few times.

On my replacement starter the small bracket which the connecting plug is screwed to was longer than the original so I removed it to get the new one in and re-attached it.

Also, that awkward to undo plug is easier if you unscrew the female end from the old starter and take the motor out. You've then got much more space to get the little red tab out so you can undo the connection.

Going back in was bit of a bitch and trying to get some good leverage to get the two 15mm bolts tight is awkward as you've only got a couple of degrees of movement with the ratchet. I did find using a 13mm 'long' socket on teh +ve feed gave me more space to re-tighten it.

Hope this may be of help to anyone having a go at it.

Cheers all,

Paul.
