2002 Jeep GC Laredo Sound System-where to start?

Hey guys,
Turned 16 on Tuesday, and my parents surprised me with a Jeep! Pretty excited about that. I'd like to upgrade the stereo system though...the previous owner(or maybe even the owner before him) installed an Alpine CDE-9870 head unit. The whole system doesn't sound horrible, but I feel it could definitely use an upgrade. I'm not a big bass guy-I listen to all sorts of music-so I was planning on skipping over any sort of extra subs in the back, and just install some component speakers in the front and eventually some 2-ways in the back. Can't quite figure out the wiring. I checked under the rear right seat-no amp-but a strange silver wire that ended there, looks like it may have been connected to an amp previously. Any tips for me? Thanks guys, and sorry if I sound inexperienced-remember I'm just starting with this whole car thing.

Fin

Welcome to JeepGarage!

First thing I would do is stop into your local car stereo shop (thats not a best buy, etc) and talk to them. Your going to be limited on your music volume limit without the amp so just keep that in mind. When I did my stereo I did head unit, 4 speakers, wiring, amp and subs. I listen to all sorts of music and I've built my system to handles everything I throw at it.

Thanks. Regarding the volume limit, I don't really notice it; loudest I've got the head unit to is 20. Not sure how high it goes. Looked under my rear right seat to try and find the stock amp, to no avail.

Thanks. Tried to find an amp in the back, but I found this:

hmm....I have my stock one still attached there. I don't believe it has any purpose. If you want and it will work, id be willing to give it to you. just cover S&H if you want it.

It's fine, don't worry about it. Just trying to figure out why there still isn't one there...gonna pull out the head unit this weekend and see if the speaker wires are connected directly to it.

i run a apline type R 15 with a 2000 watt alpine amp with the infinty sound system and it screams im debating on putting the other 15 i have in the jeep aswell but that would mean that i would never be able to get into the spare tire without help , but a good amp sub or subs and deck and speakers depending on what shape there in and you should be set check out crutchfield.com thats where i got my dash kit for my deck and they send you a install sheet telling you what wire is for what and a wireing harness for cheep and as far as subs and speakers and decks ive always use onlinecarstereo.com there cheap and fast when it comes to shipping

Looking right now at replacing the head unit, adding a 4 channel amp, and new component speakers up front and maybe new 2-way speakers in the back doors if I have enough money.

Any simple engine mods/upgrades I can do? I've got the plain-Jane 4.0 liter. Lacking a ton in the acceleration department hah.

Question guys-periodically, my car has been vibrating in idle, and tonight, the malfunction indicator light popped on blinking. I did the code test(ignition on/off/on/off/on/off/on), and it read P 0303. I searched it and it read "cylinder #3 misfire". How bad is this? Taking it in over break, but I'd like to know how big of a bill I should be expecting.
