Re: Damn Jeep (Dave's pitiful suspension upgrade thread)

Well guys since New Years Eve is amateur night around here we stay home so this afternoon I got serious about working on the old Jeepie. Got all my bushings pressed in and ready to go.Aaron when you do the rears there are 2 different size sleeves.Put 1 small and 1 larger in each link.It don't matter which end but when installing the larger hole goes to the frame.

Now for anybody that hasn't torn into a wj suspension before its really pretty easy especially on a stocker.Just take a few minutes to look around and see whats going on. This process can take anywhere from 1-3 beers. No more than 3 though cause you want to be able to drive it without a wheel falling off when finished! Heres a pic with the teardown in progress. I have one of the new links on just to see how it fits.

Now when dealing with suspension stuff a good impact is your best friend. If you don't have one you're in for a rough time Also if your gonna be messin around with taller springs you're gonna need a spring compressor at least for 1 side. Here's a pic of everything stripped.

Now I'm adding a spacer on top of my Rusty's springs and that's why the springs are out That and the fact that I'm trying to convince Aaron he has to do all this just to change his end links. If you're just changing shocks its 1 bolt under the hood and 2 on the lower shock mount. Well I see its after 11 here so I'm gonna watch the ball drop with the family. I'll continue where I left off later. Happy New Year guys!!

Re: Damn Jeep (Dave's pitiful suspension upgrade thread)

Well guys now that you are all hung over c'mon time to get back to work. One thing not to forget is when doing your front shocks is to reattach your front diff vent to the driver side shock stud. Also you'll see that I tighten my top mounts a little tighter than most just till the rubber comes out past the washer. Saves the hassle of clunking issues after everything settles in.

Now for you guys considering a spring or spacer lift the key to getting things apart and back together is to get the Jeep jacked up high enough to allow full droop of the suspension plus a few more inches. On a wj with a stock suspension once you remove the shocks and sway bar links you can push down on the axle and actually remove the springs by hand.Even with 2.5" springs like mine you can get one side back in by hand but you will need a spring compressor for the other side. Now when reassembling things a good thing to remember is to remove the bottom spring isolator from the axle and install it in the bottom of your new spring before installing. It will save a lot of grief trust me.Also there is a locating tab on on the bottom of the isolator that lines up with a hole on the bottom spring perch. Orient your spring/isolator combo so this lines up.Also lube everything up good.It makes things easier.

More to come later.

Looking good Dave! And you are correct, a little lube always makes things easier!

Lol, this site has already caused me to spend so much money on my jeep, but I wouldn't have it any other way!

Also Tony I found out you're a Giants fan on another thread. If you're gonna hate your own team at least pick a team one state over not two. I am watching the Giants game right now though, Loser. J/k bro I have to suck up I have a Bilstein rear shock question for you.

Re: Damn Jeep (Dave's pitiful suspension upgrade thread)

Here's a shot of everything of back together with the new spacer, end links and the "steins".Now something to consider when doing a lift is shock length.I went with a shock for a 3"to 4"lift shock because I didn't want my new shocks act as my lower bump stops anymore but this brings another issue in to play here. It may be possible to flex this thing enough to actually pop a spring out and that would be really ugly on the trail. So now I'm gonna have to come up with a limiting strap setup to make sure this doesn't happen. The Mallcrawlin boys seem to really like chain and I may go that route with some kind of sleeve to keep them quiet. More on this later. Now you could just go to a shorter shock and have it limit your travel(that's what Jeep does from the factory) but I wanted to get as much travel as I possibly can out of this setup so I don't mind the extra work.In the pic below you can barely see an engine mount thru bolt above the end link and I'll probably go from there to the lower end link mount on the axle.

Next up ss brake lines and an adjustable track bar!

Also at the risk of of getting Aaron going again don't forget to grease your upper ball joint while its out in the open.

Looks great! I wish the standard height bilsteins ( 3 tries to type that, f'ing auto correct kept changing it to bolstering...) came in silver those look much sharper than the yellow IMO. Limiting straps would be good if you do a lot of flexing, but when I first read chains I thought they could be noisy. Like you say though some sort of plastic sleeve would probably reduce any noise quite a bit.

just replaced mine a month ago, both the original and replacement were sealed. Oh I see the front ones lol I was thinking rear for some reason.

Where did you get the SS brake lines? I've noticed mine are getting quite rusty.
