Damn Jeep (Dave's pitiful suspension upgrade thread)

Well today I thought I'd get a jump on things and pull one of my front bump stops so I would have a template to cut my extensions.I really wasn't in to it but I need to get this detail work done so it doesn't slow down my suspension project after the holidays. Well I definitely slowed it down now As you can see I snapped both bolts off and I'm sure the other side is going to do the same thing as the nut is inside the frame rail with no way to lube the threads. It's gonna almost be impossible to drill out even at full droop and I really don't want to tear everything apart cause all of my parts haven't arrived yet and I don't want to do everything again. I can probably get an angle grinder in there and cut off the remaining bolt thread and I was thinking maybe I could mig nuts on the outside of the frame rail and hog out the back of my spacers to go over them I don't know, they're just bumpstops and there's no side stress on them. What do you guys think? This way I could have the fronts already done. Rears are already made but cant do them yet as they are inside the coils and much easier.I'm open to all ideas guys. Also as you can see from the last pic you always have to be prepared for such a catastrophe.

Yikes! Damn rust...... While I have worked with my fair share of rusty parts () any sort of welding is currently out of my experience range. But if I lived closer I'd definitely come share the misery and a cold one with ya! Good luck getting her fixed.

Re: Damn Jeep

This always happens to me, without fail. I feel your pain mate. Happened recently with my wife's car when I was doing her head gasket. The very last cylinder head bolt didn't want to play. I drilled, I dremeled, I swore, I cried, I even laughed like a lunatic (imagine Daffy Duck when he went loopy).

Why oh why do the simplest of jobs always end up taking hours?!

Re: Damn Jeep

A similar thing happened when we were putting a lift on my buddies XJ. Instead of bump stops, it was the rear shock mounts. Same thing, bolts sheared into a nut that's in the frame rail.

For one of them we heated it up really good (glowing red), then threaded a new nut on as much as we could (not much was showing), welded it real quick, and then turned it out. The other one we had to carefully drill and tap.
