Painting brake calipers?

Hey guys, I'm fairly new here as a member. Been lurking a while and now I thought it's time to start an account.

Anyway, I'm wondering about painting the calipers on my WJ. I've never painted something like that before, and I'm hoping some of you have some experience to offer. I'm going to paint them a nice, sporty red, but beyond that, I'm not entirely sure how to go about it.

Like do I need to disassemble the calipers, or can I just remove the rotors and paint them like that? Again, I have NO idea here. Also, what kind of paint? Obviously a high-heat paint, but...brand names/types?

Thanks for any answers, and I look forward to getting to know you guys.

Re: Painting brake calipers?

This is not for the WJ specifically, but the same principal.

WOW, thanks. That's perfect, actually. I just needed to know a good paint and if (or 'how') to take off the calipers.

Thank you, sir.

Re: Painting brake calipers?

I did mine, you can leave the calipers on or take them off. I cleaned em good, used brake dust remover and used the Dupli-color Caliper Paint Kit in Red. They turned out really good.

Re: Painting brake calipers?

another option is powder coating... we do a TON of calipers... fresh rebuild and they are better than new, and look great! i upgraded the rotors as well, the truck brakes like a sports car now!

here is how i did mine
pulled off the old

chem tank, outgass, and blasting

primer to smooth out the casting marks

brackets coated

FRESH rebuild

rebuilt

new rotors coated

freshly cut (barely to remove coating)

installed

few drops of anti seize...

done

Re: Painting brake calipers?

engine heat resistant. i used the spray can lime green. looks awesome left rotors and pads on. just tape everythink off and watch for over spray. tuned out awesome. when i change my rotors and pads out i will clean it up better. plasti dip the rim and they will really pop. i believe i used dupli color. cheaper and i belive same quality. brush always looks nicer but you wouldnt really see the difference. good luck. if u take apart ur brakes re apply disc quiet to pads or you will have fun with them squeeking.

What year wj you have? Just an idea maybe instead of painting your calipers buy the akebono calipers if.you don't have them yet and benefit on better stopping power.

Re: Painting brake calipers?

Autozone, etc sells caliper paint in a spray can. Not expensive at all ($8). Spray with a good cleaner (brake cleaner or degreaser), wipe good with a clean cloth, and spray them next time you do your brakes. Just set it on an old towel and watch the overspray, tape off anything you don't want painted. It doesn't have to be perfect because you really don't see much (depending on your wheels I guess).

If you are going to paint them on the rotor I would use the paint brush method linked above.
