Rustproofing suggestions

Not sure how helpful this is for my fellow WJ'ers, but if a handful read and do this, it can only be a good thing.

Today I decided to do some painting. Not the kind you really get to enjoy, but still worth a few hours of your time. First, I went out and got a can of Rustoelum undercoating in a spraycan. I removed all the inerior door panels and the liftgate hatch interior panel. I pulled back the heavy plastic waterdam and took a flashlight and did a little investigation. During the winter, salty water ends up inside your door skins from opening and closing the windows. That salty water sits in the door and eats away at the metal. Not cool. So I sprayed rubberized undercoating all along the lower seams of all the doors and the hatch making sure not to clog up the drain holes. Once that was done and the panels were all re-installed, I took a can of POR-15 and a disposable sponge brush and painted the area of the door that faces the lower sill plate when the door is shut. Right along the weatherstripping, along the entire length of the door. There is a seam along the bottom that could collect salty ass winter nastyness and eat away at the door from the outside. With the sponge brush I was able to put the paint only where I wanted it and smooth out that small seam to keep crap from collecting in there. Hopefully this keeps the lower part of the doors from getting eaten away. While I was at it, the oil pan got cleaned with de-greaser, then again with rubbing alcohol, and then slapped on some of that POR-15. I've used this paint before...it's bulletproof. It better be for how expensive it is.

It's not fun. It doesn't "look cool", and it doesn't improve performance, but it does give peace of mind and it does keep your ride from getting eaten alive by the crap they use on the roads up here in the rust belt. WJ oil pans are apparently known to die slow, rusty deaths, and I've seen my fair share of Jeeps with lower door skins that look more broken out than a teenager with a chocolate fetish.

Get out there on a nice day and do this!!!!!

Re: Rustproofing suggestions

I redone all four of my wheel arches with black stone chip stuff last summer and the frame rails. Three coats, matched the OEM finish 100% and it still looks fantastic. Super easy to clean and just spray some trim stuff on to make it deep black. Also done the fuel tank cover, what a massive difference that made!

Waxoyl'd the paintwork behind the rear and front bumpers while they were off, paintwork was perfect but while I had access, why not!

Going to do the inner doors and tailgate I think along with the tranny and oil pans in the next few months - my oil pan has a bit of surface rust on it ATM too...

I plan on keeping this Jeep for a good few years yet and want to keep it in the best condition I can. Thankfully I don't drive it daily or in Winter anymore which does help a lot!

Re: Rustproofing suggestions

Not driving it in the winter is the best medicine if you can do that. I did the 2 car thing for awhile and it was more of a pain in the ass for me than it was worth...I ended up over-maintaining 2 vehicles instead of 1! hehehehe.

I need to do the fuel tank skid too...that's on the list for this year. Mine's not bad, but it's only going to get worse. I might attempt to pull it off to really be able to clean it up...or I may price a new one. The fuel tank "skid" and the exterior window wipes always look like crap on most WJ's I see.

Good info tony. I have been toying with the idea of dressing up the fuel skid, and those damn window belts have irked me since I bought the thing!

Re: Rustproofing suggestions

Yeah, and once the rubber deteriorates, you've basically got rusty metal rubbing on the paintwork of your door. The rust virus gets passed on, and all hell breaks loose. I did the quadruple windowbeltectomy followed immediately with a quadruple windowbelt reconstruction and after a thorough investigation, all the cancer has been removed....

Re: Rustproofing suggestions

So this POR 15 stuff Is the sh@t huh? I'm planning a major "rustectomy" myself this summer. Its all just surface rust here and there but still gonna be a major undertaking but everything under there with paint on it is gonna be cleaned up and black before it gets out of control. Any volunteers?.........didn't think so............thanks

Re: Rustproofing suggestions

Yeah dude...it's a once and one product. I've used all the other paints out there that are readily available, but it all pales in comparison. If you follow the directions and do it the way the mfg. states, you're not getting this stuff off. I don't know if I mentioned this already, but I dropped a blob of it on my garage floor about 8 years ago. Not only is it still there, and totally undamaged, but it's still shiny black too...it's really good stuff. There are a few prep steps, but that's like with any quality paint job. There's a cleaner/etcher, the POR-15 itself, and then you top coat it because POR-15 itself is not UV stable. I also ended up with some on me after the first time I used it, and despite trying my best, I had black freckles for weeks. Cover up good....
