Stripped oil plug/pan

Took in my WJ for an oil change (happens for apartment dwellers) and they could not do it because the plug was just twisting and could not come lose without damaging it. They said I needed to get a whole new oil pan plus the labor it would cost around $500. I just go my engine re-done at the beginning of the year and even though the oil pan is not "New" it was rust free and repainted, seals are good and gasket is good. Am sure there has to be away of replacing the plug without having to get the full pan.
Any help much appreciated.

You didn't say whether a dealer or other real mechanic or one of those oil change places.

You can helicoil the pan to put in new threads, and get a new plug.
One trick would be to go with a smaller drain so you get a slightly larger helicoil.
This isn't cheap, from 100-200 bucks, and the big issue tends to be in getting a leak proof seal for the helicoil with any oil whatsoever around the threads.

I would be tempted to JB Weld one of these in place:
FUMOTO ENGINEERING

You could also look into finding a standard (SAE) plug that is slightly larger and see if it will take.

Whatever you end up doing, I'd highly recommend the Fumoto drain valve. I've had one on my Jeep and my wife's Jeep for awhile now. You'll never need to worry about some idiot cross-threading a drain pan bolt again.

Not sure what you mean by "redoing" the engine later on down the road, but if you plan on keeping it for awhile, I'd get a new pan, layer on a few coats of bedliner, and have it installed with new screws and a new gasket.

This is the second "stripped oil drain plug" incident I've heard this week. It's completely unrelated to Jeep or Dodge-anything, but a friend at work had this happen to him when he went to Jiffy Lube. He noticed it was leaking oil a few weeks later and went to a garage near work. They discovered the oil plug was messed-up -- it literally dropped off into their hands when they touched it.

They were able to use a slightly bigger plug and rethread the hole. But it cost him a bit -- not $500.

The worst thing that ever happened to me was with a VW Scirocco many moons ago. I took it in for an oil change and emissions test. The car was rattling when I left so I went straight back. They found the end of an oxygen sensor from the dealer's own probe stuck in the exhaust pipe! They couldn't explain it. I never went there, again. Damned idiots.

Gentlemen,

I recently went to change the oil in my wife's 4.7L WJ, and found that the oil plug would not thread out of the pan boss. Actually, I believe the entire boss with the plug just began spinning as one unit. I expect the the boss inside the pan is normally spot-welded and the welds broke loose.

Since the plug never really loosened up, no oil ever started flowing. At the time I just took some High Temp silicone and spread it around the plug to assure that no leaks occured.

Unfortunately, the plan now involves removing the pan and installing a new boss and plug. A much bigger job than you would hope for while simply doing an oil change. We have owned the Jeep for about 5-years and the drain plug has always been difficult to remove for oil changes. I guess it finally failed for good!

It does not look as if removing the pan will be that difficult though, since there is a fair amount of clearance between the engine and crossmember...
