Wire a rear USB cable to glovebox?

Hi all,

New to the forum/family, just bought a '03 WJ Laredo last week, love it but so far all I've done is put a new head unit in there and de-oxidize the headlamps. Quick question - the head unit I bought (Kenwood KDC-BT955HD) has a built-in rear USB port that I currently just have sitting uselessly behind the deck. Thought it'd be cool to run that through the glovebox and have my ipod in there 24/7. Any idea how to go about getting a cable in through there? Appreciate your help!

Fairly easy to do, also could put into center console without too much of an issue

Re: Wire a rear USB cable to glovebox?

This might work as it would be my choice if I were doing this project:
http://www.amazon.com/3-5mm-extensio...rds=usb+socket

or

http://www.amazon.com/Xtenzi-Extensi..._huc_mrai_4_dp

The catch with USB is that the cable can only be so long before the voltage drops and USB does not work. I think that is around 30 feet so I would think you will not have a problem with this install.

Re: Wire a rear USB cable to glovebox?

That's actually how the factory ipod kit works if you were to buy one. They route a cable from the back of the headunit to the glove box. Once you pull the headunit out, you'll have plenty of room to snake the cable down to the glove box....or to the center console as stated above.

Best buy has a surface mountable usb cable. It gives a factory look or can also be installed in an underdash capacity with the supplied bracket

Just ordered the Xtenzi Extension socket from your second link! Very simple project and will have a clean look while still being functional. Thanks a ton for all the advice/ideas guys.

Glad one of those options worked for you. Waiting for pics of the install!
