buying new car - good on gas

So Im going to be buying a car pretty soon here. I want it to be a hatchback (5 door) and atleast 28 mpg in the city. Thought I was ask you guys since I trust alot your guys taste in vehicles. Was looking at the mazda 3 hatchback but would like other opinions. What do you guys think I should get?

Of cars currently on the market, I think I'd say Mazda 3 too.

Unfortunately in the U.S. market the options for a 5 door car (for reasonable $) are limited:

Hyundai Elantra GT
Kia Forte
Mazda 3
Mini Countryman
VW Golf or GTI (next gen of this coming sometime in 2014 and worth waiting for IMO)
Subaru Impreza
Subaru Outback

I drove a Mazda3 5 door a few years ago and really liked it. It was surprisingly fast even with 4 people in it. I also really like the vw tdi's. My passat gets mid 30s in the city and 42 on the highway. The new ones do even better.

2004 Jetta TDI my buddy has avg 50+mpg close to 800/m a tank!

If you are looking for performance the Subaru impreza WRX would be a good choice.
Will be slightly under your MPG's though.
