Re: First Impression 2014 BMW X5

I ended up going for a new 2013 X5, it had some great incentives on it and I always thought it was a good looking design in and out. It being the last year before the 14 refresh hopefully has been fully debugged. I really dislike the 14, it looks like a big X3 and interior feels cheap.
It's fully loaded and been great so far only except for the infamous run-flats which seem to have tramlining issues. In time I will switch them out to regular non-flats.

It replaces an 02 3.0 X5 which was rock solid in reliability except for the window regulator issues that pretty much plagued all BMW models from that era.
I would have preferred the Overland to save some cash, I really like the look and options package but I wasn't able to pull the trigger due issues I saw on the lot and my research into 14 reliability. I will still keep an eye on Jeep as I really thought it would be my next purchase.

The X3 is a nice vehicle, smaller than the JGC/X5 but well built, decent to very good performance depending on the power train choice, and rides well. I looked at it a few times but ended up with the JGC due to the following:
Size a bit smaller than I wanted
RFT - I strongly feel on an suv especially being sold in an area with lots of snow these should be optional.
Optioned the same as my overland the BMW was more expensive.
Last but actually first reason is every test drive I took (and I took a few long ones) I never found a comfortable position in the driver seat.

Glad you are happy with your purchase.

What issues did you see on the lot with the overland?

I think you will love the 2013 X5, I have loved my 2011 which is basically the same. Had a sunroof leak issue very early on and one issue with the reversing sensor which I suspect was a result of the work done to replace the electronics damaged by the sunroof leak.

Well I'm not so sure of the Toureg. I found it bland and generic. Unless that's how VW sedans are too.

The diesel had tons of grunt though.

I found it much more fun to drive than the 2014 X5 or the Jeep GC with a higher quality interior than the Jeep too. It is much more expensive than the Jeep though. It only looks inexpensive when compared to the X5 and Cayenne.

VW sedans are bland and generic and much more down market than the Toureg.

I'm hearing you. I know this is a BMW x5 thread so I'll close with this. I gave the VW some serious thought. In the end the only one I would really consider was the V8 R-Line but they want around the $120k mark here in Oz and they couldn't get me to test drive even they had one sitting there collecting dust in the showroom. I basically had a blank check in my hand but they couldn't make the effort. Oh well. But then again it was hard to find a SRT demo to try out as well. The others (V6 TDI) had pleather seats and a monochrome sepia display that was boring and awkward to use. The stereo was marginally better than the Alpine the GC comes with, which ain't saying much. And they wanted $90k for it! Lol. The Dynaudio audio would've added $3k and months to the delivery. Another dealer was trying to charge me R-Line price just for the pano roof as if it was a $20 k option. I told him he was dreamin'. The fit and finish was better than the GC though but that's not hard to do and comes at a price. Even the SRT is a better bargain. It's funny because the salesman quietly asked me to bring the SRT around when I was in the area as he's a huge fan.

The previous Toureg model was the one to have. That R50 with the V10 twin turbo diesel was a monster.

Sounds like the Toureg selection and pricing is even worse in Australia than the US. Here a Lux with leather, keyless and pano roof is about 50k (bit more for the R). The Executive adds Dynaudio, 360 cameras (I live in Manhattan so love this on my X5), heated rear seats and steering wheel for another 5k. TDI versions are another 3k or so and you can have a hybrid for even more ( getting close to X5 prices). You can apparently switch out the anti roll bars with the Porsche Cayenne ones to sharpen the steering. Neither VW or Porsche offer decent lease deals unlike BMW and Jeep.

Thanks!

I saw many paint quality defects, handles on the tailgates were not installed properly on many vehicles, actually there is a TSB on this now. Mostly trim and build issues that should have been caught before leaving factory. Reading about all the electronic issues on forums and elsewhere on things like the air suspension. This caused me to pause and rethink things, then consumers reports took away their recommended rating which made me want to wait for a 2015. I still think the Jeep is the best looking/ best bang for your dollar, they just need to get QC up.
