Re: First Impression 2014 BMW X5

you hit it on the head Moosey...the 14 X5 is F-UGLY! I was looking at a 2013 over Xmas break and they had a couple 14's and wow they really made them bland. And the new Nav screen is almost Audi-like now. No thanks, I will pass

Not really the Audi dash is VW like and both copied BMW.

The BMW Nav screen is much larger and higher resolution than the Jeep 8.4.

Just remember back in the mid 80's BMW had a 1.5l turbo I4 that pegged the dyno and was putting out over 1700hp. The engine block was a stock block that had only undergone weather tuning.
An X5 with decent tires will handle wet grass and mud just fine. Grass barely qualifies as off road.

I forget all the models we looked at...but the leather in the summit was much nicer than the BMW's. Also all the materials but the leather seemed comparable to me. I really didn't see the $15k-20k difference in price IMHO. In the end my wife was won over by the audi a7...so obviously she was not biased with Jeep.....LOL.
The leather in the Summit is nicer than the stock BMW leather which is nicer than the leather in the limited. However, better leather is an option for the BMW.

Things about the WK2 interior that look cheap relative to the x5 IMHO

1) The silver or copper painted plastic around the gear selector and cup holders and in other places along with other chromed plastics.

2) The buttons below the Nav screen

3) The Nav screen itself (low resolution compared to the X5, glare problems)

4) The carpeting also seems cheaper.

Re: First Impression 2014 BMW X5

Soooo, the story ends well, at least for Joe.

It wasn't his vehicle, someone just parked a Toyota Highlander (no offense) in his stall that day.

Joe's taste in vehicles is vindicated, plus he saved himself a rash of sheit from yours truly.

Well then why did I have to get out the tow strap and D ring and tow the 2014 X5 out huh. X5 comes with run flats. Sir very few if any X5 owners are going to put anything but performance no seasons on their X5s. Used to a CCA member so I know BMW owners and taught a couple hundred how to drive. Follow me across some fields grass pastures and I show you grass that qualifies as off road. Especially at this time of year with the melting and thawing.

Do even own a GC?

No I own an 2011 X5. I wouldn't go rock crawling with it but it has ample ground clearance (close to the GC) for unpaved and/or unplowed roads and a competent AWD system. No low range of course so I wouldn't drive it down a road like HI 240. The car is adequate for the limited off-roading most SUVs do, at least in the North East. It's true that many owners order it with performance tires and even the regular run flats are not that spectacular. However if you put decently tires on one (plenty of owners do, at least in the winter), it will handle light off-roading fine. If someone is dumb enough to take their X5 off road with performance tires I guess they are lucky you are around to tow them. BTW it's not just BMW who puts performance tires on their SUV. The new Range Rover Sport also ships with tires that only seem to work on dry pavement. Does that mean the RRS is not suitable for off road use?

If you need evidence that X5s work offroad, BMW offers an X5 off-road driving tour in Namibia. See http://www.gazzella-tours.com/english/bmw-tour/

Apples to Apples, guys. There's a seat for every ass and an ass for every seat. No vehicle can be all things to all people...but I'll tell you what...the Jeep Grand Cherokee comes pretty damn close!

You are right the 14 X5 is one ugly duckling. more like a cross between a Hyundai and boring.
