First Impression 2014 BMW X5

Other than a few snarky remarks, I normally try to avoid the competitor bashing that sometimes is common on any board, but I'm just gonna say it....

Saw the new X5 tonite and first impression aethetics only was it was not a BMW, or any german car, it was so round, bloated, homogenious, heck, it was soft looking. It looked like another plain, undifferentiated, crossover.

Flame away. My opinion only.

Re: First Impression 2014 BMW X5

moosehead, at first I thought you were just trying to bash the X5, so I went to the BMW website and took a look at the new X5. I have to say, you are 100% correct. Soft/plain are the exact words I would use to describe it. There is nothing that inspires when looking at the vehicle. I'm surprised that BMW would release such a boring vehicle.

Re: First Impression 2014 BMW X5

Its a nice vehicle for hauling the family to grandma's for the holidays as long as grandma doesnt live on a snow covered dirt road and you stay on the interstate. Does a better job than the competition from Lexus, Audi, and Infiniti.
About equal with Mercedes and the Sport has the advantage with its off road ability.

At a herding trial last month we had to use an ATV to tow out a 2014 with temp tags. Wet grass and a little mud were too much for it.

And you can feed a family of four for a month on what an oil service costs for an X5 after the free service expires.

Also had a look now, and I agree, it's gone all soft and 5 series on stilts. Older X5 models were still good to look at and tough, but this one seems to have been designed for school drop offs

Yeah but I think what's appealing to buyers are Crossovers that are trying to by minivans. Consider this, Acura MDX. Any review you read states that it's athletic, fun and the v6 is high revving and has a great note. Now look at the 2014 MDX, it got soft and quiet. I've read multiple places it was from buyers complaints and that's what the buyers wanted. It's not all about the MDX, but I think BMW is trying to stay relatively competitive with the X5 in the crossover market, instead of being the bran with the niche crossover. It's sad but I can't blame them for making efforts to be more mainstream. The next Audi Q7 should be interesting...

Re: First Impression 2014 BMW X5

It was wierd. A coworker had it parked in his slot with a new dealer temp tag. Another coworker said, "hey, joe bought a new car"! My first reaction was, no way Joe would buy a nondescript Japanese crossover as his stable also happens to include a late model 911T. I was shocked to see the bimmer x5 badge upon close inspection.

Hope Joe doesn't see this thread cause he bought one fugly, soft, bland grocery getter. Wasn't the x5 reinvention highly anticipated?

I'll see if a side by side photo opportunity presents itself.

Re: First Impression 2014 BMW X5

Not for me but I did test drive it and it drives fine with (heavy) sedan like handling. Performance was decent but not great, much like the 6 in the GC although subjectively it felt like the X5 might be a little quicker. Hard to tell such things from a short test drive. The interior is both better and worse. The stuff on the upper drivers door is the same as the stuff on the bottom of the passenger door. Not something you see on the GC where the materials get worse both lower and further aft. On the other hand its quite bland and uninspired, nothing really wows me in there. The electronics/features also lack the cutting edge although they are fair decent for the class overall. Still in my opinion they lag behind the GC which I feel is the overall class leader in the tech/feature department. The utility and space is quite good in there in terms of the day to day drudgery of getting to work, shuttling kids, hauling junk, etc. In this are its equal to the GC. Obviously its not as capable in the grand scheme, cant realistically go off road, towing is suspect at the max rating. I don't think they are really selling to the crowd that has those things as a concern though.

Keep in mind everything I've stated is my own subjective view and the sum would be that even were the price equal I would not choose the X5, at the price delta, not a chance in hell.

Having owned a 335i sedan, and it's the same inline 6 that's in the X5, it's nothing like the Pentastar. Twin turbos, decent exhaust note, high revving.

Re: First Impression 2014 BMW X5

BMW is offering a whole bunch of M Sport options for the 2014 X5. You used to be able to get X5M which would run rings around a GC SRT8 but for substantially more money. Current X6M puts out 555hp.

If I needed this much on road performance I wouldnt take GC SRT8, X5M or AMG ML or Porsche Cayenne but a Range Rover Sport which can run with them all on road and leave them all parked off road.

If I really wanted that much on road performance I would go a little on the raw side and get Caterham Super 7.

Again it comes down to personal choice and your budget and what capabilities do you need out of your vehicle(s).

BMW has always offered several M Sport options for the past at least 4 years. And you still can get an X5M, you just have to wait. Just like when the WK2 came out, had to wait for the SRT.
