no...good disscussion. Show me these huge taxes that US charges on imports that they dont charge on US cars...ie-gas guzzler, cafe standards etc.

Re: My dealer says yes!

To me, "truck" and "ute" are two different things. A truck to me is far more capable than a "ute". The ute is more like a "mini truck" to me (i.e. Tacoma, Frontier, Dakota, etc). They serve different purposes for different people.

If I had a 15,000 pound fifth wheel, I wouldn't buy a ute. But say I had a little pop-up camper or a small boat and didn't want a big ass truck - the ute would be right up my alley.

Re: My dealer says yes!

Sorry Scott, I can't recall any hard and fast data right now on the tax situation.
I think we maybe have our wires crossed on the term "import"? When I say it, it means a vehicle that is actually imported as a whole, NOT an overseas brand merely manufactured Stateside.
A snippet from a paper that you no doubt already know;

Japanese automakers began producing in the United States in the 1980s largely as a means
to avoid the constraints of a voluntary restraint agreement on Japanese exports of passenger
vehicles to the United States. These assembly operations are known as ‘transplants.’
Localized production allows Japanese automakers to remain responsive to U.S. market
developments, alleviate potential trade friction, and dramatically reduce transportation costs.
German automakers BMW and Mercedes-Benz adopted this strategy in the 1990s, with
production beginning in their newly established plants in South Carolina in 1994 and
Alabama in 1997, respectively. The Korean industry will be the next to establish assembly
operations in the United States, with Hyundai announcing in April 2002 that it would begin
production in Alabama in 2005.

Kinda looks like the factory R50, but is obviously a "tuner" special. The 4.2l petrol V8 can be made to sound sweet.
