New old toy

I always liked classic cars and finally had the means to get one. Bought a 1958 Ford Thunderbird, exactly 58 years old. It was restored by the previous owner in 2012, but there are still some things to solve.

That is a gorgeous classic. Do keep us updated on what you're going to do with it. I think a lot of us would definitely be interested to follow your "upgrades"!

For now only planning to solve existing problems, like dragging brakes, hard starting and a leak in the power steering actuator. Just changed all the brake cylinders (old ones where rusty inside) and overhauled the brake master cylinder and power brake unit. Unfortunately cracked a manifold from the brake system, for which a new (used) one is on its way from the States. The power steering leak is small, so will postpone that for when the rainy season starts, end of November. The bird will not leave the garage when rain is expected.

Re: New old toy

The accelerator mechanism for some reason was not original. The problem with it was that it needed a lot of force to start moving, and then the Bird was launched like a rocket. Tried some adjustments, but to no avail. Ordered a complete accelerator mechanism from the pedal until the carburetor and man, what does that make a difference. Will still need some fine tuning to the transmission rod though, but I'm quite happy sofar.
Also a missing guide rail from the passenger quarter window mechanism arrived and is installed, now I can open that window as well. Especially on a non AC car, the more wind which can blow through the cabin, the better.
The dome light was missing, but that was finally only the dome light cover and bezel. The rest was still there above the ceiling and after putting a new light bulb in, it is even working with the door switches and the light switch.
The horn was not working. Even there was no horn ring installed, even though it came with the Bird. But some of the attaching parts where missing. Ordered those and now have a horn, but not the sound I wanted. Will order a pair of original horns from the States.
Im also not too happy with the rear suspension, its too stiff. The springs are not original and it seems that springs for a heavier vehicle where installed. Just as a test i drove around without shocks, but it was still very stiff. Will get a new set of springs as well, to solve this.
New brake cylinders, overhauled master cylinder and overhauled vacuum assist installed. It brakes ok for now, but at some point I want to put some disc brakes up front.

Re: New old toy

It's coming together nicely. Do you have a good source of parts? When I worked at a body shop in the 90's we restored a 67 suicide four door. Parts were hard to find back then, I'm guessing more aftermarket parts are available now. When I worked at the Ford dealership body shop the owner had a 55 and a 57. Nice cars. I like that 58. Nice job.

One of the members on Squarebirds.org has some junkers, from which he sells the parts. There are also still a lot of NOS parts and even newly made parts for the Birds. Only looking for some rear spring insulators now. The 58 model year was the only with coil springs, thereafter they only used leaf springs. The insulators are difficult to get, but maybe I can use them from an other car.
Rockauto.com also sells quite some parts for the Birds.

Sounds like you're making really good progress! Nothing changed on the exterior much so far? Send us pictures when you can! Those who can only dream of one of these will thank you.
