Re: Ultimate SUV: Range Rover Sport or Porsche Cayenne?

Hmmm, I honestly still have to lean towards a WK2 w/Hemi as the ultimate, if you just took HALF of the price you saved, so say 50k for 2014 Overland, 100k for the cheaper of the others, "roughly" ....so half of the diff is 25k.....Put that 25k Into an Overland.......tell me WHAT VEHICLE would you choose.....hell 10k for a Supercharger kit, another 15k for strictly off road gear... and your looking a truck thats still 25k LESS then the cheaper of the others with 1000x more capibilities
\

just my opinion, and I'm not biased at all, .........hence why I joined a Jeep Forum for my 2014 Overland

Re: Ultimate SUV: Range Rover Sport or Porsche Cayenne?

While I still think the Porsche Cayenne Turbo (S) is an On Road Monster, capable of stomping almost anything else other than a Super Car (Corvette/GT-R/GT500) into submission; it just can't hang with the WK2 or the Range Rovers off road.

The 2014 Range Rover Sport is easily equal in capability to TWO Grand Cherokees (SRT & Trail Rated Overland) since it can probably match both on & off road. And as someone mentioned, it darn near costs as much as two WK2s! But it costs a LOT less than the Cayenne (a base RR Sport Supercharged is around $73,000 - $76,000).

And to make things even more interesting, Land Rover is coming out with a SUPER Range Rover Sport edition sporting a 542Hp engine along with some other tweeks called the Range Rover Sport R-S:

Range Rover Sport and Evoque rumored to get RS versions - Autoblog

The current RR Sport does 0-60 in 5 seconds or less. Wonder what the R-S version will be capable of doing?!

I'm sure they are hoping to at least try and equal the SRT...

No doubt about it. Where the RR really fails miserably is the interior - the WK blows it away in styling, layout, controls, intuitiveness and technology. Even IF the RR were to be slightly better off-road, WHY would anyone pay more for that, and accept so much less interior-wise. I just don't get it.

The WK2 SRT official 0-60 time is 4.8 seconds (but many have reported 4.5 seconds).

The 2014 Range Rover Sport 0-60 time is 5 seconds or less (but some have reported consistent 4.7 to 4.8 seconds).

So the SRT has a slight but measureable advantage. That might be one of the reason why they are coming out with the R-S version.

I TOTALLY AGREE! The interior of the WK2 is outstanding! Much better than anything in the RR lineup!

A person might be willing to accept a slightly worse interior to get a better performing vehicle. The RR Sport can come close or equal the performance of both the WK2 SRT and Trail Rated versions. So it would be a choice to pick function over form.

The reliability of the all new Range Rover Sport isn't known yet. Like the all new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the RR might have improved significantly.

No vehicle is perfect. My 2012 WK2 has been to the dealership several times for various problems. Other folks have had issues of varying severity.

That 4.8 "official" time wss from 2011 for 2012's..fyi. no official time was released for 14.....BUT several magazines and writers have documented 4.3's. The test driver for SRT had documented a 4.1. The 14' from 30-90 is 2 seconds faster thsn the 12'. A completely unbiased bob lutz...called the Srt jeep the best American vehicle.

Haven't fully read all the postings on this subject, but has anybody figured in the parts / service costs for these three vehicles? I don't even want to think about the astronomical Porsche Service costs...but does anybody know what they get over at L/R? I'm thinking they're up there as well!

Re: Ultimate SUV: Range Rover Sport or Porsche Cayenne?

Just ran into this thread. Seems to be filled with LOTS of opinions and emotions and not much fact. But that's what the 'net is for, huh!?!?!?

I almost bought a new Cayenne diesel this summer, but just couldn't stomach the final price--c. $87K after beginning with a $55K base price. I now have a new '13 JGC Limited that I'm very pleased with, but if anyone thinks that the WK2s (and I'm NOT including the SRT8 here) even approach the on-road skills of the Cayenne, they're sadly mistaken or smoking something illegal.

But certainly the new-gen Cayenne, without 2-speed t-case, is not as off-road capable as the earlier generation, and of the latter I know and do not merely opine. Here's my '04 Cayenne Turbo.

Dig the licenseplate number--TTURBOS.

Yes, the 295/45-20 tires proved to be too-low aspect ratio, but that's all I'd change if I did it again. I sure did love it.

Re: Ultimate SUV: Range Rover Sport or Porsche Cayenne?

Looks like other folks think the Range Rover Sport and Porsche Cayenne do well in head-to-head competition:

And while the RR Sport's interior isn't as nice as the WK2's, I now realize that it isn't totally horrible. They just went for a simpler and cleaner design.
