New Wagoneer List of Demands

I'm hoping to revive this topic and maybe get some vibe going around the new Waggy!

I currently own a Maserati Gran Turismo, a Jeep Grand Cherokee, a Durango R/T, and a 1991 jeep grand Wagoneer. Which makes me either a brand enthusiast and a potential smart customer, or just certifiable, depending on who you ask.

These are my list of demands from Jeep for the new Wagoneer, and if they are not met, shall be forced to keep driving my 1991 :)

1. New exterior design that looks like the new Grand Cherokee SRT. A little bigger then the Durango.
2. A top of the line de chromed version.
3. Use the same leather materials as my Maserati, and allow me to choose the stitching and leather color (Yellow stitching on black please)
4. Let me choose any color I want from the jeep fleet, detonator yellow please :)
5. Keep current head unit and keep improving it
6. 7 seats like the Durango, electric headrests and folding seats
7. Keep the current 8 speed tranny
8. Include the quadra drive and air suspension, locking diffs please
9. Hellcat engine
10. Call the top of the line Wagoneer, Chief, or Willis, or some other retro name to keep the sentimental guys happy
11. No fake wood!
12. No fake wood, ever inside or outside!
13. Ignore the design of the old Waggy, it is a beautiful vehicle, but it was designed in the 60's, the goal is not a Beatle, a mini, or a PT cruiser, but a modern luxury car.
14. Include everything in the top of the line model, just let us choose colors and customize the interior.
15. Keep it under 90K, but not by much
16. Oh yes, and a built in winch, with synthetic rope, and matching JEEP gloves so I can look all spiffy when I'm on a real trail, and need to give a rangy a pull from a ditch

Ferrari made beautiful vehicles that were successful from the 60's on and never once made a retro look, so no fake wood and clumsy design!

And remember, I hold an America Icon hostage, and if jeep doesn't answer my demands, I may need to go off roading in my 23 year old Waggy, and peel all the fake wood off :)

With what I know about the WS...

Some of that will come true.

And more.

Of course I can't say what will come true. :)

You are a tease!

Now what do I need to do to get the first one off the line...........

Good point.

So from your experience, how far down productions is a good time? A couple of weeks?

I had one of the first PRODUCTION 2008 Dodge Avengers off the line at SHAP.

Never again.

I have mixed feelings about wood exterior theme. It almost wouldn't seem like a real Wagoneer without it... but it should be real wood, not cheap plastic.

Zoot up the Durango to Summit levels and put in a 6.4 engine to give it some beanpower and call it a Wagoneer. Offer metal sides, and a modest selection of real wood exterior--and possibly a nod to modern themes with carbon fiber in place of the wood. Make sure all three rows of seats are comfortable.

What's with the wood fetish :)

There are some more modern materials that could be used on a luxury SUV.

Aluminum body to save weight, or carbon fiber doors and panels and so on.

Unless we are saying that without fake wood you can't have a Waggy, if this is the case, a real wagon (the Waggy's granddaddy) had a horse in front which is even more retro, and doesn't use fossil fuel at all...........

Oh and just to make my point, the original Wagoneer / cherokee chief didn't have no wood on it! this was only on later models to create some "luxury" effect.

My Wagoneer "demands":

  • Classic, clean design (nothing overly forward-thinking like the Cherokee)
  • Durango-sized (not bigger, because we don't want it to lose all off-road ability)
  • Aluminum / carbon fiber use on body panels where appropriate (get the weight down to lighter than current WK2)
  • Tuned Eco-Diesel engine with stop/start technology
  • Quadra-Lift suspension
  • Quadra-Drive II (real transfer case) with front and rear ELSDs
  • Full skid plates
  • Wrangler Silent Armor tires on the ORAII package
  • Rock rails on ORAII package
  • Proportional trailer brake controller
  • 360* Camera
  • Next-generation UConnect
  • Redundant physical A/C controls
  • Open-pore real wood trim in interior.
  • OPTIONAL real wood exterior trim on all trim levels (don't force it on people who don't want it, let people get it on any trim level if they DO wan't it.)

That would require paying 3 people, 7 days a week to install it, plus the cost of materials.

Considering how big of a job that would be, I seriously doubt that will happen because they will have nothing to do on a Grand Cherokee or Durango and will just sit there on the line until a Grand Wagoneer comes down the line.

Yeah I really don't think THAT is going to happen. This won't be a high production vehicle... well at least I can't see it being one right now.

ALL aluminum!

Now that the Range Rover, Jaguar, and the next Ford F150 are made will all aluminum body. It's time for jeep to get in on the game.

Lighter body, a lighter hellcat engine, that's progress!

If I remember history correctly Jeep was always a leader with early adoption of 4 wheel drive and unibody construction as a few examples, so let's keep that tradition of leadership going........

SO, I own 3 Vipers (soon to be 4), plus some other Chrysler products, and am either going to get the Jeep SRT, or the wagoneer... So loyalty, and eccentricity established, I was wondering:
1) Any hint on sort of timing? I could get an SRT now, but am willing to wait for an uber-lux wagy
2) Please no wood, come on not the 70s (sure optional, great), but honestly, deal breaker for me
3) Huge engine package, mucho power needed, as well as towing capacity (SRT engine option would be super-cool)
4) I like the previous ideas on Durango size. I was thinking about that one until I drove the SRT
5) Aluminum frame is another great idea. THis is replacing a H2, which is great from a tank perspective, but 6k pounds is just too much. I'm going to doubt the actuality of this, the Viper is not even an aluminum frame, and if any car in their roster deserves that, its the Viper.
6) Frankly don't care about cost, anything under 100 is probably reasonable if you put enough of the cool stuff in it, we are head-on against Cayenne if we put the right engine in there, and can beat them on lux, maintenance, off road ability, and still be much cheaper. Having said that, if we go low-end (read one step above the non-SRT jeep) then over 70 is too much. My pref is to go against the cayenne market.
7) not into diesels, just me, I know.

Basically a wicked super lux suv that blows the doors off a cayenne S and offroads better than a G55 would be perfect, there isn't much competition for something like that. There IS a market for it, I see Cayenne S' everyday (and they look, sub optimal IMO).

Thanks! Great thread!

I agree with all of these. If they go high-end, which is what I am hearing, I am buying one for sure. Also, welcome to JeepGarage!

Lastly, what are the years and models of all of your vehicles (out of curiosity)?

#26 ·
1. Model year 2017. Normal release timing.
2. No word on *exterior* wood.
3. 6.4L HEMI
4. You've got the size right...
5. Don't know yet.
6. You don't care about price? OK when your window sticker gets printed up, I'll make sure it says $201,990. ;)

#28 ·
LOL thanks! "Don't care" might have been overstepping, I meant "don't care if competitive", ie 90k or less.

But the my 2017 is very troubling, I don't think my aging h2 will make it that long, my guess is GC SRT, then maybe a shift in 18/19 if the car is awesome as I think it will be.

New stuff Im hearing is the next gen Grand Cherokee may be pushed back from a JAN. 2016 debut to a normal aug/sept 2016 debut for the 2017 and the WS Grand Wagoneer pushed forward. Just a possibility/maybe. MiKe Manley really wants a full sized SUV on the market ASAP!

I just came across this thread. I'm very interested in the new Wagoneer, or whatever it will be called, so will add my .02 as a current WK2 owner/enthusiast.

I am very impressed with the clean lines, sporty look and monochromatic paint treatment of the 2014 Durango R/T. The racetrack taillights leave me cold, however. Clean and simple is always better, IMO.

Jeep could do worse than just switching this body over to the new Jeep platform! The new Jeep needs to at least have one higher end model that duplicates these Durango R/T features, and that eliminates all exterior chrome, including the window surrounds.

Body style should be as modern, clean, sleek and sporty looking as you can make it. No retro styling or exterior wood. That would be a deal breaker for me.

Current Durango length is perfect. I have no interest in anything larger.

Rear captain's chairs are nice, but the split bench second seat needs to be at least an option in all models. There are times when a full flat floor is essential to me for occasionally carrying building supplies and other cargo. Even the folding front seat would be nice, and wasn't available on my particular 2012 JGC Overland.

As others have mentioned, electrically controlled headrests would be nice for increased rear visibility when not carrying passengers.

I'm anxious to see (fairly soon, hopefully) some photos or accurate drawings of how this new Jeep will look. If it doesn't excite me, I want to be able to purchase a 2015 Durango R/T before it becomes history!

So now it looks like it will be a 2018 my for the Grand Wagoneer, with prices from $65K on up to compete with the European luxury brands.

The Dodge Durango R/T is looking better all the time! Saw some high resolution photos (Motor Trend, I think) of a 2014 Redline Pearl R/T recently. Wow! Now that is one good looking vehicle. Even the racetrack taillights, which put me off at first, blend in well with this color. I think I see a 2015 R/T in my future, while waiting to see what the 2018 Grand Wagoneer will bring.

Are they going to be more competitive with the powertrains on the GW? A 6.4L will get even worse fuel economy than the current 5.7L Hemi (which is underpowered relative to the fuel economy). Jeep needs some higher tech engines to remain competitive especially if they are going to be selling at the higher price points.

#36 ·
The Hemi is rumored to be getting quite a significant update soon, so I'd imagine yes.

They can't leave this engine alone nor can they abandon it. There are too many Americans (Read: 98.2%) that are adverse to their big rumbly V8.

My only hope is that they come out with a vehicle with a stark styling difference from its platform-sharing siblings.. Just because it is based on the WK2/Durango platform doesn't mean it should be limited to the same styling..

I'm hoping for a WK1/Commander or Compass/Patriot connection. Same platforms but very different styling. Though, I sort of expect it will be more along the lines of the Mercedes SUVs, where they have an extremely similar nose but different hatch areas.

Although they could always end up coming out with another KL-type product..

Slap the front clip of the grand cherokee on a Durango, redo rear hatch and rear most windows to fit jeep boxy style and you are good to go :)
Use some light aluminum parts and modern blacked out look and you have a winner.
Money saved on design, should be spent on offering free hell cat engines :)
