Re: 2014 Jeep Cherokee rv tow wobble

I am getting the wobble (more like severe side to side turning) while towing (yes, I have ADII) after going over worse than normal bumps. It goes away after I stop and restart. The tow bar locking arms are "locked".

I have a Blue OX base plate and a Blue Ox Aventa LX tow bar.

Blue OX support says that they have gotten several calls on this from Cherokee owners. They suggested two fixes. 1.) adjust the camber on the Cherokee - they said there is an alternate setting that prevents the wobble but no one has told them what the setting is 2.) put bungee cords on the steering wheel to reduce swings.

Has anyone tried changing the camber? If so, to what setting?

Re: 2014 Jeep Cherokee rv tow wobble

@macfan - You know some people that work at FCA. What do you suggest as the best method to report an issue into FCA for appropriate engineering attention?

The Cherokee will go into a death wobble while being towed behind a motorhome at low speed when going over a bumpy road (or running the front tire over a curb, like I did). Supposedly there are about 14 owners reporting this condition to date. There is a suggestion by a tow bar company (Blue Ox) that there may be a camber adjustment that might help, but does not have the setting.

Any help with getting an appropriate contact would be much appreciated.

Honestly, you probably are never going to get anywhere by yourself. It is the job of the front line people at Auburn Hills to keep you from getting anywhere near the top people at Chrysler. Even your dealer's rep has limited and restricted access. Your best bet is to work through your dealership's owner as surprisingly Auburn Hills will listen to dealership owners. You would have to get the owner to call himself/herself directly as any go between will get short circuited. I will ask around but I don't think any of the guys I know have access to front suspension info or a way to get it. Also, you would be surprised how much of that stuff is subcontracted out making it even harder to get at. Part of the reason info on the 9 speed transmisison is hard to get at is that a lot of of the info that was gathered when Chrysler started having problems with it was obtained through subcontractors. Some of those engineers/subcontractors are the same people who work for the NASCAR teams. I am sure there are/were a lot of nondisclosure agreements signed.

*******I am not sure what Chrysler is working on right now but there were a whole lot of "mules" out on US 23 late yesterday afternoon. It was hard to tell what they were with all of the camouflage/disguise on them but they looked like some kind of a cross between a Dart and a 200. It has been a few months since I have seen any Cherokees being tested so I kind of think the current generation Cherokee is pretty much set in stone other than some minor cosmetic changes. The last changes I saw tested were some minor changes to the back end bumper where the tailpipes go through/under the bumper. My guess is that Chrysler might be going to lessen their costs with the 3.2L by going to one tailpipe like on the Grand Cherokee V6. I would think the perfect time to make any major changes to the Cherokee is when it is moved from Toledo.

Re: 2014 Jeep Cherokee rv tow wobble

You are not alone. I now have compiled a list of 24 owners of KL Cherokees who have had this problem while flat towing behind motorhomes. We will hopefully be able to exert more influence by acting together. Any who wish to be added may contact me twoflyrodders@hotmail.com.
This is a serious, dangerous condition and FCA needs to address it.

Re: 2014 Jeep Cherokee rv tow wobble

Please add me to your list. Tonight, after a drive of 250 miles and only 4 miles from home, I took a local rough railroad crossing at speed and the Cherokee suddenly began pulling the back of the rig from side to side. The railroad track crosses the road at an oblique, not a right, angle and this may have been a factor on this occasion. We stopped to check whether the Jeep had gotten a flat but everything seemed to be OK. My wife walked along beside the car for a few yards and found nothing untoward so we carried on back home and had no further problem. The tow bar arms are not quite as stiff to move as they were originally and I'm wondering whether that might be a factor. I will go and tighten those nuts. It certainly was a scary experience, one which I would not like to experience again.

Doubt it has anything to do with your tow setup. FCA is allegedly aware of the problem. Check out this thread: Severe shaking problen towing behind motorhome - Page 8 - 2014 - 2015 Jeep Cherokee Forums

Martin -
Sorry to hear you are having the issue too. There are now 39 owners on my list, and I will be glad to include you if you send me your name and email address. Your description of what happened is exactly typical. Do not spend thousands of dollars (like I did) trying to fix your motorhome or towing gear - IT'S THE CHEROKEE.

Re: 2014 Jeep Cherokee rv tow wobble

You are not alone. There is a growing number of RV owners that are experiencing the "Cherokee Death Wobble" while flat towing. It is not a tow bar problem as it happens with Blue Ox and Roadmaster. It is a Jeep problem caused by the redesign in 2014 of the Cherokee. You can view the problem on YouTube by searching "Jeep Shaking Violently". That Jeep was doing 25-30 mph when it was videoed. It happened to me at 70 mph. The redesign uses a motor connected to the computer to dampen the steering but the motor/computer isn't energized while towing and is only energized when the motor is running. I am in a FMCA forum of 40+ people who are having the problem and we have an email chain going. If you'd like to be added please email me. You can also find people with the same problem on iRV2.com forums as well as jeepcherokeeclub.com forum.

I'm glad that I found this. We are contemplating a Class A/C and a tow vehicle. The Cherokee looked good until now

You may be better off towing your '13 Grand Cherokee (if it's got the 4WD with a neutral, that is). The newer '14-15 KL Cherokees have electric power steering unlike your GC. The fact that the KL's electric power assist is off while towing has been pointed to as a possible cause by some on other forums.

It does have the transfer case neutral, but it's too heavy for any camper I'll be buying.
