Re: 2014 Jeep Cherokee rv tow wobble

I have a 2014 Trailhawk that I have towed for a couple of thousand of miles with no trouble at all. I tow it behind a Phoenix Cruise 31' class C. I posted on the PC owners forum and several owners are towing Cherokees with both Roadmaster and Blue OX set ups and no one has had any issues at all. The PC's are little lower to the ground and I am dead level with a 2 1/2" drop down receiver. I still fight the few extra steps I have to go thru vs's the Liberty CRD that was so very simple. the Cherokee tows a lot easier than the Liberty ever did, probably about 700 pound lighter ( diesel Liberty). Thanks, Ron G.

IMPORTANT NEWS

A friend of mine has just referred me to this item from FMCA regarding the tow wobble which I have experienced once:

FMCANationalOffice's PhotoFMCANationalOffice
Yesterday, 02:33 PM
Fiat Chrysler today (January 20, 2016) released the following information exclusively to Family Motor Coaching magazine.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US LLC (FCA) has announced plans for resolving a problem that sometimes occurs when 2014-16 Jeep Cherokees are towed four wheels down behind a motorhome.

FCA released a statement in response to inquiries by Family Motor Coaching magazine and concerns of a number of Jeep owners who reported problems when flat towing their Cherokees. The owners reported that the vehicle sometimes wobbles significantly, raising safety concerns. The wobble reportedly has occurred at slow speeds and at highway speeds, and has happened with a variety of motorhomes and towing systems. The only way to stop the wobble, owners have said, is to bring the vehicle to a complete stop.

The FCA statement said: “Under certain operating conditions, such as traveling excessively bumpy or poorly maintained roads, the flat-towed vehicle may not consistently track in line with the tow vehicle.” The cause, according to the statement: “The vehicle’s Electronic Power Steering (EPS) system is inactive while the vehicle is being flat-towed with the ignition in the ‘off’ position. Accordingly, the vehicle does not benefit from the system’s function.”

A Jeep official said the company knows of several dozen Cherokee owners who have experienced the problem. For those owners, FCA will “provide a complimentary jumper wire harness and switch to ensure the vehicle’s EPS system has power to function while it is being flat-towed. These components have been engineered and validated by FCA US LLC and will be made available to all customers through MOPAR, as early as January 29. In addition, all Cherokee owners will be contacted directly by FCA US and provided with updated instructions for flat-towing. These instructions supersede all previous instructions. Also, the vehicle’s online owners manual will be updated.”

Family Motor Coaching brought the problem to the attention of Fiat Chrysler in September 2015 after an FMCA member contacted the magazine and provided a link to a video showing a Cherokee wobbling as it was being towed behind a motorhome. FCA assigned engineers and technicians to investigate and resolve the problem.

For more information, Cherokee owners can call the Jeep Customer Assistance Center at (877) 426-5337.

Does "For those owners who have experienced the problem" include ONLY those "several dozen Cherokee owners who have experienced the problem", or does it include all Cherokee owners who tow behind a motorhome, whether they've experienced the problem or not? Maybe I'm reading too much into FCA's statement, but I'm naturally suspicious.

I've only towed my Cherokee about 1,200 miles, all without incident, but then, I've only towed over good roads. I guess I need to talk to my dealer to get the answer, but maybe someone else has already done that and can coach me as to the dealer's response.

I called Jeep Customer Care to make sure they know about me. They opened a star case on my VIN. They said the harness should be ready end of February. I haven't checked with them lately. And I haven't heard anyone report they have had the harness installed yet.

Re: 2014 Jeep Cherokee rv tow wobble

Just a quick update, FCA has begun shipping and installing the wiring harness to power the electrical steering motor while flat towing. I'm scheduled for installation Thursday March 3. From what I have found out, the harness consist of a fused line under the hood, and an on off switch mounted in the center console. While towing the fuse is to be installed and switch in on position. When parked or stopped overnight, the switch is to be off and the fuse pulled. Also FCA recommends a charge wire to the KL Battery, to prevent excessive battery drain.

Any info on why the fuse needs to be pulled and the switch turned off? I can understand pulling the fuse at end of trip, but not for overnight stays.

Pictures of the switch would be great if you have time. I am curious what this will look like mounted in the center console. Thanks for the update,

Re: 2014 Jeep Cherokee rv tow wobble

Photo of flat tow switch installed in center console in the on position. If the red cover is closed the switch returns to off position. The 10 amp fuse holder under the hood is behind the battery box and In front of the brake lines. Hope this is helpful. Install was about 2 1/2 hours from svc advisor moving vehicle to notification it was done.

Picture didn't upload, will try again.

Awesome thanks bro! Glad they put it out of sight in the console rather than on it somewhere. So you need to pull a fuse under hood and then flip the switch?

That arrangement seems so over engineered. If you have to go under the hood to pull a fuse, why not put the switch in there as well?

The Jeep dealer in the city where we are for the next few weeks has made enquiries of Mopar and cannot guarantee getting the kit in before we have to leave. He said only 49 have been made so far and they are all sold.

Thanks for the photos.

How much did it cost you to get the harness installed?
