2014 Latitude 3K report likes/dislikes

Overall still pretty happy with the purchase. Some things I noticed in my brief 2 month ownership (just hit 3K miles).

1. Cold Weather Package Issues and Likes
Dislike: front windshield wiper defroster doesn't really work or become warm to touch; not sure if an electrical issue or not yet.
Like: seats get nice and warm; steering wheel as well. Very happy with the package.
Like: remote start works well; however, the effective distance of the remote is lacking. Also, the car sounds like it misfires/is going to stall or not start when it is started (not really a remote start issue)

2. Fuel Economy
Originally, it looked pretty good by the computer measurements 30-31 hwy. Overall, with my driving style, it boils down to about 22 mpg combined (measured by actual gallons put in the car over miles driven). I am still pretty satisfied with it. Btw I have the 2.4L AWD.

3. Driving
Overall, I am pretty happy with how it drives. Steering is tight and the car seems to have a little rigidity like the original cherokee which I like. Cabin is quiet as is the engine. Suspension makes a comfortable ride.

Like: seats fold up and down very easily. Makes great space for storage. Very happy with the layout and easy of use.

Like: lighting is fantastic.

4. Engine
Pretty happy with the 2.4. As stated above, the engine sounds like it is misfiring/about to stall when you first start it (all temperatures). Other than that, it has plenty of pep getting in/around traffic.

Dislike: I have smoke (more likely steam) billowing out of the front of the hood when vehicle stops. I tried to inspect where it was coming from. It does not appear to be from the engine. I am going to have to check the radiator. This is a concern and will likely be brought to a dealer.

Dislike: Hood. Not sure if it is really thin metal or plastic. It is very light and flexible. I recently took a trip to VT and one side of the hood is lower than the other so there is a gap between the edge of the hood and the side of the car above the wheel well. I am not that the hydraulic ram just needs to be adjusted.

Dislike: a lot of cheap, thin, sheet metal/tin foil looking material surrounding the engine components. Not sure how it will hold up.

Dislike: I also am getting a chemical smell in the cabin as well as in the garage when the car is parked for the night. I can't make out what it is but i do not have any fluid leaking from the vehicle as far as i can tell. It may be related to the radiator issue I mentioned above.

5. Transmission
Not so happy with the 9 speed transmission, but not aggravated or upset. Generally neutral I guess. when I first got the car it drove great. It seemed to get worse the longer I drove; it is either a bad flash that I have not updated or I am a really crappy driver and the intelligent learning is just expressing that.

I get really hard shifts/jolts from first few gears. Downshifting also is rather hard.

Additionally, having problems with the car shifting out of 3 or 4 - the car will stay at around 3500 - 4000 rpms on the flat without downshifting which is a pain.

Sport shift was helpful as will be described in my Snow Storm Cherokee Review Below.

6. Entertainment

Dislike: The Uconnect system is scratchy when used via bluetooth or USB when paired with iPhone 4S; music playback sounds scratchy and way too much treble (adjusted stereo settings without effect). The handsfree microphone is not sensitive enough and I have been told that is difficult to hear me when using that feature.

Like: Stereo is nice. Controls are very intuitive. Steering wheel controls work great. Very happy with the organization. Sound is pretty good.

Overall, all controls on the vehicle are great and easily accessible. Very happy.

First Use in Snow Storm
(I say snow storm but we really only got around 8"; I know this may not qualify as a lot to non-NY's)

One of the reasons that I purchased the new 2014 Cherokee over other manufacturers was because 1998 Cherokee was unstoppable in the snow and I really wanted that reliability. I am in Emergency Services so I don't have the luxury of calling in to my 911 shifts because of weather. Unfortunately, the new 2014 Cherokee (as delivered) did not perform that well in my personal opinion. However, I am going to give Jeep the benefit of the doubt and assume it is the crappy tires that it came with. My next move is to try to find some more aggressive tires.

I was very excited to try it out on the snow. First experience was up in VT where we had about 6" of fresh snow one weekend. First drive on the snow was not so great. Vehicle would not drive up hills in the snow even with the "snow" torque/RPM settings engaged (not sure exactly what it does, just assuming it adjusts some type of driving settings).

The remedy seemed to be to switch to sport shift mode and take the traction control off. Driving with the vehicle in 1st or 2nd in the deep snow with traction control off seemed to do a little better.

Again, I think this is more of a tire issue than vehicle platform issue.

Second experience was with the NYC snow storm with around 8 inches. Generally, same experience with a couple of additional frightening ones.

Day after the snowstorm was driving on I95 on hard packed snow. Was not driving fast (maybe 30 mph) on a straightway; few seconds later car was horizontal against path of traffic sliding. Fortunately, there was not much traffic and collisions were avoided thanks to the Porsche Cayenne that yielded to my lack of control over the vehicle.

This happened two more times; both at low speeds. It seems like the front end of the car, or the car in generally is very light and just seems to lift up and go where it wants. Again, not sure whether it was caused by the AWD system or what; all I know is that I had constant speed and direction and the issue happened a few times. I never had a similar issue in my previous Cherokee or more recently Mercury Mountaineer.

Again, hoping the crappy tires played a factor.

Braking in the snow seemed ok and never seemed to be out of control. Steering did not seem to be an issue (other than when vehicle completely lost control on the highway).

Summary:

Overall, generally happy with the vehicle. Going to have a few things checked out at the dealer and also going to search for some better winter tires.

Re: 2014 Latitude 3K report likes/dislikes

Good review.
Hood is aluminum, so that's why it feels light. I thought my alignment was off on the hood too at first from the driver seat but was not the case when I got out and looked closer...may not be the case for you. I'd have the smoke/smell issue looked at, may be a transmission leak, a couple others have had that. If you haven't yet, check out the uconnect app for unlimited remote start range.

Re: 2014 Latitude 3K report likes/dislikes

driving on ice which is what hard packed snow becomes is pretty much a free for all all it takes is a slight rut to make you correct and before you know it youve over corrected. based on the roads in illinois last week which looked the same i think plain and simple that speed has more to do with control in these conditions than anything else, i saw in 50 miles on I70 at least 200 cars and semis either in the median or off the side of the road stuck in the snow many of the semis had the trailer come around and they were facing eastbound in the westbound shoulders/median so id say if you were going faster than 25 or 30 the cause is likely speed

As another member said check for a trans leak. Would explain the smell, the smoke/steam, and even the worsening shifting( low on fluid ). Another member here had a chemical smell and it was a trans leak. Yours may be worse.

Snow mode adjusts the amount of torque being sent to the front and rear when 4WD is engaged( 60/40 ). Also, it has you take off in 2nd gear instead of 1st. Here are 2 Jeep videos explaining ADI & ADII( not sure which you have )...

I am very surprised at your tire comments. Especially where you call them "crappy"??? Your post title says you have a Latitude so that should mean you have 225/65R17 Firestone Destination LE2's. I actually have that exact tire in that exact size on my Patriot and they are outstanding in the snow.

My Patriot is like a little tank in the snow up here in NH. Hardly need 4WD. It plows along in FWD just fine even in moderate snow. If it starts getting slick( hard pack snow, ice, slush, etc... )or the snow really gets deep I will use 4WD just to be safe. I have nothing but good to say about the tires in the snow and in general. Excellent tire.

They actually keep flip flopping with the Michelin LTX M+S2 as the highest ranked light truck/suv class highway all season tire on Tirerack. Some days it is #1 and some days #2( #2 this morning ). Their snow ratings are better than the M+S2 however. You are the 1st person I have heard say anything negative at all about the Cherokee in the snow on the LE2's. Not that I doubt you or anything just am stunned by your negative comments.

Re: 2014 Latitude 3K report likes/dislikes

Good review,

In answer to #5 and your shifting issues, there is a TSB from Jeep that should correct that problem. Mention the issue to your dealer when you take it in for the possible radiator leak.

Check you audio settings in iPod or iPhone. Maybe able to get an EQ setting that makes your music sound better thru bluetooth that way. I have mine set to small speakers; for me the best compromise.

Also, make certain that volume is up on your audio playing out on your phone. Seems to make it a little better for me.

Not great but better than when I started.

Re: 2014 Latitude 3K report likes/dislikes

Thanks for all the input. Will definitely have the smell/trans checked out. I am not sure what the specific tires are on the car but you are probably right. I am looking for a more aggressive tire than just all-seasons; just personal preference.

Someone mentioned the UConnect iphone app. Will this work on the latitude with the standard 5 inch screen? I tried to research it on the Uconnect site a little bit.

Thanks!

Re: 2014 Latitude 3K report likes/dislikes

I want to share my experience with the chemical smell. It took 3 trips to the dealer (and researching on the internet) to determine that the smell is your transmission. I can tell you that Chrysler is jumping on this problem and installing new transmissions.

I would suggest calling the customer service number at Chrysler to register and get assigned a case number. Then go back to dealer and have them work with Chrysler. I had a new transmission shipped and installed in 1 week.

Very happy with my 2014 Cherokee Latitude.
