Re: 2014 Trailhawk rattle

Showed it to the Jeep dealer and they reported it to STAR. They're going to replace the gasket around that A/C line.

Re: 2014 Trailhawk rattle

Soooo......has Jeep issued any kind of TB or service bulletin on this yet ?
Milous....would you know ?

(just hate to hear things like this on what appears to be a fairly good launch for the Cherokee)

Re: 2014 Trailhawk rattle

The service department didn't say there was, but the guy could see that the foam was in the wrong position so he ordered a new one. I'm not confident it will fix it, I think there's a design flaw. I might hold off on the fix for a little bit and see what happens with the TSBs. They said they were going to have to drain the A/C and heating to replace that gasket, I sure don't want to do that twice. I think I'm going to redo my own fix with more foam so it's even more padded.

I say if Chrysler (Star) issues a bulletin based off this fix, then Richard Allen should get the credit. Way to help out the KL community Mr. Allen, my hats off to you

Re: 2014 Trailhawk rattle

So far a lot of us are getting dash rattles, but for different causes. Richard's was the heater pipes against the firewall. Mine was the A/C pipes against the firewall. They definitely need to re-engineer how tubing goes through that firewall and recall the KLs for inspection/retrofit.

Re: 2014 Trailhawk rattle

Interesting. So HVAC lines are causing some type of resonance that is severe enough to start oscillating the dash (just the gauge area?). Is this only happening with the 3.2 Pentastar, or is the issue also with some 2.4 TigerShark engines?

Re: 2014 Trailhawk rattle

Yes, apparently at low RPM (1100-1500) there's enough oscillation to cause tubing to rumble against the firewall. The solution we've been able to rig up is to brace the tubing against something on either side of the firewall.

Re: 2014 Trailhawk rattle

So to dampen the resonance, by bracing the tubing you are adding rigidity and/or mass (extra mass being from whatever is being used to fab up the bracing), correct? I'd like to know what is the root cause, in that I don't understand a lot about automotive HVAC systems, but I thought the "hot" side carried coolant to the heater core, and a fan blows across it to provide heat through duct work and/or blend doors. The the "cold" side is the AC compressor using gas (refrigerant R134A) to take heat out of either the outside air or inside air (recirculate selection on AC knob in dash) and then blowing the cooler air in to the cabin with duct work and/or blend doors. Any of this correct? So, my question is then, what would cause these pipes that carry either to vibrate that bad? Is the engine having a vibration issue that is carrying over into the piping or? I guess I'm just miffed that this kind of issue is showing up in what I feel is an excellent vehicle and what has been an overall a good launch.

Re: 2014 Trailhawk rattle

On my KL the coolant line has about 1/4 inch free space around it as it passes through the firewall. It's not braced at all, other than some soft foam, and you can easily wobble it with your hand and tap it against the sides of the opening in the firewall.

At low RPM in gear and moving there is a noticeable rumble inside the passenger compartment, not sure if it's mechanical or sound-based. Anything loose to rattle, including items in the console, the glovebox, and tubing passing through the firewall.

By using a large zip-tie to secure the coolant tube to the heater hose clamp it braces the coolant tube against the foam in the firewall and won't let it vibrate.

Re: 2014 Trailhawk rattle

I have ordered a Trailhawk so I hope it does not have a rattle like this and I hope that they come up with a good fix for those that do. Our Charger has a rattle that comes and goes and it is frustrating.
