2016 V-6 No longer Recommends 89 oct???

I was reading over 2016 owners manual and both engines now recommend 87 oct fuel. I looked again at 2015 manual and it recommends 89 oct for V-6. Wonder if any changes to engine or programming?

Re: 2016 V-6 No longer Recommends 89 oct???

I just filled up this morning with 91 octane to see if it helps in this heat wave were having as the last tank was 87 and i got 20.2 mpg intown driving. The highest i ever got doing the same intown driving was 22 mpg with 91. The best i have got with 89 was 20.8 mpg. I check every tank full. At the track i always use 91.

You know that the higher the octane the less fuel and more additives not necessarily better see if the diff in cost outways you giving your hard earned money to those that have way more than you to begin with unless you come from an oil family in which case all is fair.

Today i filled up from the 91 test and with the same weather and driving the mpg with 91 over 87 was 1.5 mpg better. Theres .20 diff in price so ill just use the 87 until i go to the track then ill load up with 91. The 89 is a tad better than the 87 but not by much.

Most of the cars i buy are high performance that call for 91/93 octane and with the 3.2 having 10.7/1 compressin ratio it could benafit from a higher octane for the main reason for not having timing being pulled in the heated summers and at WOT. The only reason i may use 87 depends on how the rest of my testing goes the rest of summer. I just filled up with 87 so this test will tell just what gas im going to use for normal driving as the 91 as shown that it is far better at the drag strip than 87 or 89.

I understand you completely as I steered away from high performance when I got married and its been a mix of sweet and sour two beautiful weddings the last still in university got my kicks with performance boats that were owned by someone else other than that had a stroke 3 1/2 years ago fortunate that still got 90% of my faculties the other 10% we can blame father time all in all still a kid at heart expect to give a 98 JGC enoughf TLC just to keep as close to mint as possible as it was given to me cause they know it will keep me occupied on my spare time

We test and tune IN THE 1/8 MILE. Remember my last 2 jeeps were srt8. Testing diff things have gotten the jeep from 10.21 to 9.83 in the 1/8 mile and the 0/60 from 7.22 to 6.77 by trying diff gas octane and other things to get the jeep to respond better. The 3.2 really is a high performance motor with hi compression of 10.7/1 and dobble over head cams and 4 valve per cyl with a all aluminum motor. It also put out more hp per cu in than the 6.4. 3.2 = 271 hp divided by 198 cu in = 1.37 hp per cu in. 6.4 = 485 hp divided by 392 cu in = 1.24 hp per cu in.

Interesting. My 2014 manual recommends 87 for the V6 and 89 for the V8.

I can't see any reason why they'd recommend anything higher for the V6.
