3.2 tests finished with different octanes.

Ok i finished my test with 6 tank fulls of 87,89,91. All the driving was intown so this way is was a fair test.
Best avg gas mileage was 20 with 89 octane.
2nd best was 18 with a tie between 87,91 octane.
Best mid and wot respond was 91 hands down and 87 was the worst.
Our group is going to T&T in the 1/8mile with there srt8 and i will also join in using 98 octane just to keep the pcm from pulling timing as this way the little 3.2 engine will be running all the timing it was designed with. There will be another thread on the T&T outting. Other states gas is way better than ca as were limited to 1.8% oxy in all 3 octanes on the west coast and all other states have 3.5% oxy in theres.

Interesting, thanks for posting. Here in Nevada we will go to winter blend next month and that will lower gas mileage.

The winter blend has more oxygen in it and yes it will lower mpg BUT it will also make more hp with the higher oxygen in it. West coast go from 1.8% to 2.2% oxy and midwest and east go to 3.8% from 3.5% oxygen.

@jim383 - You've explained to me how you get to race weight for your timed runs. What do you do to the computer controls such as ESC and TCS before a run? Or do you just leave them at their default settings?

When i turn the t/c FULLY off i put it in sports mode and that turn off the t/c partly so then i turn the t/c back on then turn the t/c back off and hold the button in 5 seconds or until you here a chime then the t/c is fully off.

Thanks.. Interesting test.
I find much the same using 89 octane E10. For me that gives me the best mpg. Using 87 actually lowered it

I have used 100% gas in the past only because my last vehicle '04 Grand Cherokee v8 would do+ 1.5 to 2 mpg better with it. This '14 Cherokee V6 actually does the same within .5 mpg using E10 89 octane vs. 100% gas.

Now talking about Cal gas. I call it smog gas. The same as the big cities get during the summer.
Driving into the big city (Chicago) I will kill my mpg if I fill it up with gas(Summer big city gas) there on my way back home. It is very noticeable on my mpg.

Winter gas in ca and west coast has the oxygen go from 1.8 to 2.2% and all other states has there from 3.5 to 3.8%.

Re: 3.2 tests finished with different octanes.

Just filled the tank, for the first time, with E10 87. The dash said I was getting 22.1 for thye 308 miles I covered. Using my calculator, I was getting 25.19 and it should get better. This was done with a 50/50 combination of country roads and city.

Just my $.02 worth. :-)

That great mileage for the 2wh drive what the trailhawk are fighting is the 479 lbs heavier than the 2wh modles. I wanted the limited 2 wh drive but there wasnt any deep cherry with the 3.2 on the west coast so they said we just got in a trailhawk deep cherry and we will sell it to you at invoice so i jumped on it. Were going on a trip to las vegas in oct and this will be a great test.

Re: 3.2 tests finished with different octanes.

These are my thoughts/observations with my 3.2L A2 Limited. I think 87 octane gas is the minimum you can use to get decent mileage. Plus its hard to find gas that does not have ethanol. Thus, regular gas that has 10% ethanol just does not provide enough power. Using 100% gas, even at 87 octane seems, at least in my vehicle, to be the equivalent of 89 octane gas that has 10% ethanol.
