3M (or XPEL) Clear Bra / Paint protection

I've been looking around at 'paint protection' options - mostly finding 3M brand or XPEL. I'm not really sure on the difference, technically - or indeed they are the same?

I've found one place who offers a 'kit' for a 2014 Cherokee TH, and they claim it's the same for the 2015. They offer a hood, mirror, fender kit (regular or bikini cut), and a bumper kit. It looks like in either case, the decal is not covered. (3M Paint Protection | Car Pretty)

Has anyone had this, or something similar done to their Cherokee? Anyone have any suggestions, experiences or warnings with any of these products? One brand or another?

Currently, with no technical knowledge, I'm leaning towards hood, mirror, fender and bumper kits. Not really sure about bikini cut...

If you happen to be in Canada (and in particular Edmonton, Alberta), can you make any specific recommendations?

Re: 3M (or XPEL) Clear Bra / Paint protection

I am planning on installing this paint protection film on the new Cherokee I just ordered but have a concern about the "Park Assist" sensors in the bumper. Does anyone know if this film will affect the operation in any way of these sensors?

Re: 3M (or XPEL) Clear Bra / Paint protection

Has anyone tried putting XPEL or 3M over the black hood decal? I'm planning on doing XPEL but I ordered my vehicle with the hood decal. I was going to leave it up to the tech whether he wanted to cut around it or go over it. Just curious what others experience might have been.

I've been researching this, and found out that many places will use pre-cut pieces specifically for each vehicle model, and the Cherokee patterns I've found all seem to go around the decal. They have a "dip" in the hood part that fits around the decal. I'm sure they could custom fit the hood if you wanted to cover, say, the entire hood, or go over the decal if you did the standard 18 inches.

Re: 3M (or XPEL) Clear Bra / Paint protection

Thanks mynerva. I had my '14 GC done by a local XPEL shop. They did it custom and did an awesome job. The decal is really thin on the KL and I'm afraid that any rocks would chip right through it so I'm leaning heavily towards doing the whole hood. Just a little concerned that the XPEL won't stick to the decal properly. The decal is pretty slippery.

Re: 3M (or XPEL) Clear Bra / Paint protection

Also as a general comment about XPEL, I love what it's done for my GC. Note that all of my comments are about the XPEL Ultimate. They make a few different levels of XPEL.

I had the front bumper, lights, and hood completely covered. I had the front quarter panels done back about 18" and I had the roof between the windshield and the sunroof all done with XPEL. It was put on in Jan '14. My local shop was pretty expensive. I think it was about $1,300 all in, but they did an amazing job in a very sterile dust free environment. The end result was perfect.

After 16,000 miles of a pretty even combination of highway and city driving I have no paint chip issues. I have a few very minor spots where the XPEL was hit and you can see a minor blemish in the plastic. I haven't tried it yet, but I've been thinking about hitting those spots with a hot hair dryer and seeing if I can massage them out. Mind you that when I say blemish I mean a very small spot about the size of the tip of a pen where you can see the plastic has been hit by something and permanently damaged it. Most spots where is gets hit do disappear after a few days out in the hot sun.

But the best example I can give you of how good this stuff is is a spot I have just the the right of the Jeep badge on the front of the GC. It is a pretty flat part of the hood and it was obviously hit by a rock that was pretty big. It was hit so hard that there is actually a dent in the hood. The dent is about the size of a nickel. Sucks to have that but it proved to me how good the XPEL is, because even though the XPEL was obviously hit hard, there is NO paint damage. If I were to pull the XPEL off and have the dent pulled you would never even know it was hit. To me that is pretty amazing. If there was no XPEL on there I would have definitely had a major chunk of paint missing.

I really wanted to have my entire GC done when I bought it. It's black and it's a PITA to keep it looking good. But when it's clean it looks really nice. The biggest problem is you really see any paint chips in dark paint. I had a dark blue BMW 535xi for years and it was littered with paint chips. They were really obvious. The KL I ordered is white. You can see a very faint line on the black GC on the quarter panels where the XPEL stops. I've heard on a light colored vehicle it's almost impossible to find.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Re: 3M (or XPEL) Clear Bra / Paint protection

Great write up, ken11705. I am looking to do the same treatment on my '14 Overland. Thanks for confirming I have made the right choice!
