My Garmin, which I updated in May shows that it goes through. His Nav tells him to drive several miles out of the way to get to the destination.

There are probably hundreds (maybe thousands) of such road openings and closings around the country that would be missed by upgrading only every 3 to 5 years.

Um...it is very easy. Lots of places to get them "free".

Re: 8.4 questions?

Up until they came out with the new and upgraded center consoles (literally this year) I wouldn't argue with any of the valid points you have made. But the NAV that is embedded in the 8.4" uConnect system actually updates automatically with traffic updates to include road closures and openings. Updating your NAV maps is mainly for industrial changes (i.e. where's the nearest chick-fil-a).

I sincerely recommend looking into the new interface as it was said before, the upgraded screen and NAV option is a whole lot more than just NAV. Or you could just go to a jeep/chrysler dealership that has the 8.4" screen option installed and play with it yourself.

Good post. The new 8.4 Nav unit is a big selling point for me with the new Cherokee.

Your answer implies some sort of illegal activity.

Re: 8.4 questions?

What is illegal is what they charge for the updates.

What they charge for updates may be obscene, but acquiring them without payment is unlawful.

Agreed. You have a choice whether or not to buy it.

It may be higher than what some want to pay, but "illegal" is not fitting.

I am looking at a Cherokee Limited (8.4A AM/FM/BT/ACCESS is standard). There is a $795 charge to upgrade to 8.4A AM/FM/BT/ACCESS/NAV. Jeep's description of the two systems indicate that for $795 I will get navigation and a 1 year trial of Travel Link and Traffic. My point is that my current Garmin already gives me that for life with no yearly fee.

Folks who believe that $795 plus yearly subscription fees are worthwhile should go for it. I will stick with my Garmin and invest the money I save.

Re: 8.4 questions?

Ten years ago I may have looked at this issue differently. AS it stands now, obtaining the updates with out compensating the owner is part of the reason for the high cost. Anyone can try to justify pirating the updates, but in the end this is what cost the rest of us more.

Yeah, it's kind of like shoplifting a designer shirt because you think the price is too high.
