Re: 9 speed transmission?

In the recent (May '15) edition of Wheels magazine (Australia) they completed a long term review of a 2014 KL Cherokee Limited (3.2).

For the past few months the reviewer kept on bitching about the KL's transmission and throttle response. Then just recently he had the KL at the Dealership for a routine Service where they conducted a transmission flash.

The reviewer was told by Jeep Australia that they wanted the car back, which he was very grateful to to do after months of poor driving experiences. However when he picked up the car after the transmission flash he reported that the KL was now driving superbly.

He didn't want to give the KL back, and felt like Cinderella as in the 11th hour his KL Pumpkin had turned into a KL Gold Chariot On his final long term review he gave the KL a good report, but only because the transmission flash for his vehicle was so successful. Up until then he was disappointed.

I haven't had any flashes conducted on our 2015 KL yet, and to me it appears to be driving very well. I wonder if I will be able to notice a difference if Jeep conduct any transmission flashes during our KL's first service. I haven't been notified of any such requirement from Jeep Australia.

Over 5,500km completed without any issues to report

Re: 9 speed transmission?

I have now had my Trailhawk for 1 year and 7 months. I have 18k miles on it. I've had it at speeds up to 105mph. And I have still never seen 9th gear. Even worse, is I recently brought it to the dealer for the recalls for "Durability issues" with the tranny, and afterwards it feels even worse. When at a very slow speed such as just before a stop and no pressure on the gas pedal, if I start to accelerate it hesitates then feels like someone has just let off the clutch and it lurches forward very sharply. It didn't do this before the recall. I seriously hate this transmission. Anyone experiencing anything similar?

Re: 9 speed transmission?

I have only seen 9th gear several times. That is at around 74mph going down a slight grade with my foot off the gas. At least I know its there.
As far as your issue with the RO1 I believe it has something to do with the update eliminating 2nd gear on the downshift. Thus in your situation your acceleration is happening from 3rd and not 2nd or 1st.

I had an update in June (2015). That update was one from May 2014. Dealer said that was the only one that showed for my Cherokee. Not the RO1.
I have noticed that there is a harder acceleration needed when accelerating from an almost stop situation. Its worse if I am towing my boat. I have checked this out by moving the gear shift to the left to check the gear I am in.
It stays in 3rd till I am stopped! I can feel the Cherokee laboring a bit in this situation. It is not a situation I get into much and I will avoid if I am towing.
Unless you are hitting the gas hard in this situation you should not be jerking.
I use to get a hesitation on acceleration when I was in the AL period. That is long gone but was a safety issue the 5 times or so it did happen.
The only reason I mention this is because the RO1 requires an adaptive learn drive (AL) by the 2 Techs to manually set the clutches and shifts.
The RO1 states that if this drive is not done Undesirable shifting can/will result. I would imagine also if not done properly there would be problems.

Also there was 1 or more TCM updates since then to deal with this 2 gear issue and other things, I believe.

I would pay another trip to the dealer to resolve this issue as it is resolvable.
Mine was a 12/11/13 build with that May 2014 update as the only TCM update I have had. My 2nd gear issue is really a non issue for me as my shifting (1/2 and 2/3) actually got better. I had no complaints before.
Also you may want to ask them if they did the snap ring test on your Cherokee. That was part of the RO1. That Snap ring was causing some of the transmission failures with this ZRF. Much easier to replace than the entire transmission if it fails.
Good Luck and I am sure the dealer will resolve your issue. With 18K on it I have to believe its the way the RO1 was done.

After the flashes on my 14 th mine would start out in 3 rd gear from a stop and go and to get it to start out in 1st i would have to let it sit at a stop for a lest 3/4 seconds or as soon as i stopped i could down shift it to 1st so chrysler told dealer to put in a new valve body and they got it in at the dealer so i said nope that it ill file a lemon law and the dealer said go drive a 15 with the same 3.2 v6 and see if its ok. So i did it was a limited fwd with same eq except no 4x4 with i dont need anyway and it was a lot better so they cut me a hell of a deal on my 14 with 16,000 miles on it and the limited is 519 lbs lighter and gets 2 mpg better in town and 4 mpg better on the freeway. The tranny on a stop and go will start out in 2nd gear which it is suppose to do. MY 14 on a stop and go would start out in 1st gear which is what they were strying to change to 2nd gear is what they told me and the only thing i miss on the 14 is sports mode shifting.

Re: 9 speed transmission?

I have an appointment at the dealer this Thurs to get the oil changed and stuff before I head to upstate NY over the weekend. I'm gonna mention it to them then and see what they say.

On an unrelated note to the trans, I've been having a problem with the FM Presets on the stereo. I have the 8.4 inch touchscreen with Nav, and for some reason, if I have the FM Presets set to 2 different station, whenever I turn the car off, the next time I turn it on, the #2 FM preset will switch to whatever the #1 preset is set to. It only happens on the FM band, and only with the #1 and #2 presets. Dealer can't figure it out. Even did a factory reset on the unit and it didn't fix it. They said the only thing they could think of doing was replacing the entire unit.

Re: 9 speed transmission?

This may relate to your problem with the presets. - the update/recall, whatever you want to call it, to improve system security against hackers also included four or five other components to fix problems with the radio and media set up. One of these dealt with tracks on the SD card being shown on the screen and played several times over. That fix worked. Maybe after you perform this update your presets will behave themselves.

Re: 9 speed transmission?

Well, the Preset issue has been an ongoing problem for almost a year. I did the update for the hacker problem a few weeks ago and it didn't help. Also just got the map updates which also came with the latest software update too. The issue started after I did one of the software updates last year. The dealer has done a factory reset on the unit, and it still didn't stop the problem even though they were confident that it would. Looks like a new unit might be in order.
