Anyone Use Their KL as a "Toad"?

I am curious how many of you use your Cherokee as a "toad" behind an RV?
We have ordered our Trailhawk because it is one of few vehicles that can be towed 4-down behind a motorhome-is not too heavy-and offers some fun & luxury when it is on it's own.

We have plans to add the Rocky Road Step Rails and maybe even the winch package (hey...it looks cool!) but we will also have to replace the red tow-hooks with the tow bar attachments so that we can attach a towbar .

Are there others here who use their KLs' as a toad?

Please give me feedback as yea or nay.
Thanks in Advance!

JeepDiva:

I have a 2014 TH and have towed it a few times behind my motor coach and it tows extremely well, I utilize a Roadmaster tow set up vs's the Blue Ox that I have heard has had some issues in that the tow points are to wide and it is stressing the tow bar arms to much. getting the tow brackets on is not and easy job so I had the dealership to it, tech said it was a real pain. Cherokee tows much better compared to my Liberty CRD, the Cherokee is close to 550 pound lighter so big difference right there. You better do some research before installing the winch since I would be concerned that if you use the Roadmaster set up there will not be enough clearance across the front but not sure? best of luck.

You wouldn't happen to have any pics of the front tow points on yours, would you?? Also maybe Center to Center measurements

Might want to check out what these restrictions are about on pg 90 of the 2015 OM:

Modifications to any part of the air bag system
could cause it to fail when you need it. You could
be injured if the air bag system is not there to
protect you. Do not modify the components or
wiring, including adding any kind of badges or
stickers to the steering wheel hub trim cover or the
upper right side of the instrument panel. Do not
modify the front bumper, vehicle body structure, or
add aftermarket side steps or running boards.

Yea!

Posted the following on another forum:

It's the perfect SUV to tow behind a motorhome and these are some of the reasons:

- Reasonably light weight, but solid and feels substantial.
- Very good mpg for a SUV
- Plenty of power from the engine
- Handles very well
- Great height and mud/snow capabilities
- Comfortable, quiet, and looks good
- A driveline that can actually put power to all four wheels when needed
- Can turn it into a trailer with the neutral feature (AD2/ADL)
- No speed restrictions while towing
- Steering wheel does not lock when ignition is off
- Cherokee has an always-on 12V outlet; good for plugging in the aux brake system

The people at Jeep know some owners will tow the Cherokee. It is engineered for it. The front end has holes and class 5 nuts welded on the frame to provide for baseplate mounting.

Got pictures of mine in an album --> Jeep Garage - Jeep Forum - Array's Album: Test Run.

I installed the Blue Ox baseplates and did the wiring of the tail lights.

Re: Anyone Use Their KL as a "Toad"?

Thanks Array for posting this. I just ordered a Trailhawk for my wife and it will double as a Toad.

There is mention earlier in the thread regarding the Blue Ox setup and a potential issue with the base plates being too wide on the Cherokee. Any issues with your rig?

I really can't believe there would be an issue with the tow points being too wide. Hard to believe they would be wider than my 2006 Silverado that is set up to tow. My problem is that we downsized and our new coach is not rated to tow more than 4500 lbs.

Any problem with stressing the tow bar is probably caused by someone trying to back up with the TOAD attached.

I've got a Limited and that issue did not apply to the Limited/Latitude Blue Ox baseplates. I have no issues with my setup.

I heard on this site that there was an issue with the TH Blue Ox baseplates being too wide for the older Blue Ox Aventa LX tow bars. Allegedly the newer model Aventa tow bar resolves the issue. I never personally looked into all of this.

As you may know, the people at Blue Ox have a good reputation and should be consulted on this matter.

Re: Anyone Use Their KL as a "Toad"?

Array has done a good job with his photos as to installation of the base plate. I am sorry I have not gotten to measure the Roadmaster center to center measurements. I have been dealing with 50" of snow in less than three weeks here in NH! Like has been stated I would call Blue OX and see what they say, I know I read in Motor Home magazine that they were having issues with bar stress and were looking at alternative set up including perhaps a bar across the front like Roadmaster. I can not believe the connector points would be any different between the Trailhawk and the Limited but who knows? I used a wireless light set up this time and I love it, no cutting into the complicated electrical set up on the Jeep. best of luck.

The TH baseplates are reported to be 37" on center. Mine (Limited/Latitude) are 34" on center.

Re: Anyone Use Their KL as a "Toad"?

Spoke with a nice lady at Blue Ox. I have a Blue Ox Aventa LX towbar that came with my used motorhome purchase. I've never towed a vehicle before, just trailers, so I'm still in learning mode.

The lady at Blue Ox said that the Aventa LX towbar should work with the Trailhawk's wider base plates (Blue Ox BX1136), but to be careful on sharp corners because the extra spread of the towbars brings the Toad closer to the rear of the motorhome. Probably obvious to most of you, but as I said, my first time with a "Toad" so now it makes sense to me.

Found plenty of other posts, and some videos, with great information including some that have my intended setup, so it looks like I should be okay.
