He described it being similar in operation to a throwout bearing, but it is definitely a shaft the interlocks into the torque converter. I'm not a mechanic, so that's my best description.

The problem is being researched at the supplier level, and the likely fix is that the units will be shipped with a dealer fix kit in the passenger seat to be installed before the units go on the lot.

Since the guy works on the line & has 25+ years in the plant, I'd say his take is beyond repute.

In plain speak, it shifts into drive too hard for the company's liking....and there's an engineer who couldn't.

If this is true it sounds like an internal part. So Your saying the dealer will have to tear about the drive train before it is even sold? If this is true which I kind of question it sounds like a disaster to me.

These type of things happen way more than anyone realizes...probably even to the vehicle you're driving now.

To boot, this guy (see below) pulled in to demo a Grand Cherokee for his dad, and said the same thing, but they were looking into a software fix to change the shift points...it had mfg tags, in case anyone is wondering. Was a Latitude, and he wouldn't even let me run it through the car wash for him. I had to ask, though.

IF this is true, then Chrysler is returning to its "old ways", which almost caused its demise several times. Back in the bad old days, they would ship every piece of poor quality control crap, and "pay" the dealer to take care of it.

We lost many a customer that way. "Sorry, the car you ordered 2 months ago came in, but it needs a week in the shop before you can drive it."

I certainly hope this is not true.

Yikes!

So my local guy has to tear apart and install an important component in a tranny with which he has no wrench time? What could possibly go wrong?

Re: Are dealers ordering these?

You guys are like me...worst possible case scenario. After all the preaching the factory has done about quality improvement, customer satisfaction/survey scores, I sincerely doubt they're going to ship something that's gonna be a problem.

As hypocritical as this sounds, people like me on the inside probably cause more harm than good by keeping the rumor mill going. In my case though, I had my info confirmed from 2 employees that actually build the things. I was just shedding some light on what's up, and letting the masses know: 1.) there is a transmission problem 2.) it will be fixed properly the same as if it was in the plant before anyone takes delivery.

Re: Are dealers ordering these?

In all seriousness, I'll give this the same chance as I would before hearing about this issue. I may, however, delay a purchase until they are shipped from the factory without this flaw.

Right or wrong, as an average consumer I'd be more comfortable with my purchase that way.

Is there any chance that Chrysler will give any notice about this publicly? Anyone who's been following the development of this model is aware of delays because of transmission issues, at least they could say "We've identified the problem and have a correction in place for it".

Re: Are dealers ordering these?

At this point it is not changing my mind on the purchase. It just means an additional delay before mine is delivered.

It didn't happen to the vehicle I am driving. Mine was built on a tuesday and thursday it rolled into the dealership and friday I picked it up. That would not be enough time for the whole drivetrain to be tore apart. Its one thing to have a software flash and something else to have it disassembled. Once the bolts come out many other problems can be created in my opinion. Chrysler does have a history of shipping them and then doing software flashes later for poor shifting transmissions but I don't think that makes customers real happy that just bought a new vehicle. It is good they are taking care of it before the sale. Its also good that they are catching this before the customer does and having dealers tell them they all slam into drive like that its normal. I am still not convinced this is true but I guess we will see.

So you're implying that you have taken delivery of a 2014 Cherokee...am I reading that right?
