Re: Blue Ox Baseplate for Trailhawk

I got the Roadmaster Brake Relay installed and it works just as I wanted it to. I tied it to the 12v lead from RV and whenever the electrical to RV is connected then the brake switch acts as if brake is not depressed so you have to put car in neutral for tow before connecting electrical to RV.

It was really tough to cut the wire for the brake switch and crimp on spade connectors. There is two green wires of the four to the brake switch. Be sure to cut and put in relay in the green/light green wire and not the green/yellow wire. It is hard to get to the wires thought I was able to finally get the connector out of the Brake Switch and that helped though the lead is still short to work with. Sorry for not getting more pictures of the brake swith relay and wiring but I was working late at night trying to get this done before leaving on our trip and was frustrated and running out of time. The relay was a chore for me.

After connecting the relay, I had enough leads to just put it under the dash to the left and zip tie to the harness to keep from falling down.

I put the 12v outlet under the dash to the left for my brake supplement.

Also here is a pic of my RV with Trailhawk in tow. We are on day three of our three week vacation to the northern part of New Mexico and Arizona and southern part of Colorado and Utah. Happy Travels

Re: Blue Ox Baseplate for Trailhawk

I'm going to stick with my mag lights and bypass all those issues. Got them for our previous toad after have separate bulbs put in our Colorado.

I also have a BlueOX light bar (fits into the receiver on the back) that I used with our 2nd toad - Tahoe - but found the mag lights more convenient in case we want to open the rear door. I also have a spare set of mag lights under the floor of a large storage area in the MH so I figure I have some "backup".

Would love to be out at the Four Corners now. We are currently going in circles planning an October trip. We are going to take in Balloon Fiesta again, this time for the Wednesday Mass Ascension. So that gives us an anchor we can't move. Do keep us posted (even if just a PM or two) on how the Jeep performs out there including any towing tips and what you are seeing that could be of interest to others.

At this times our plans include Pike's Peak via Cog Railway on one day and Jeep the next. Cumbres & Toltec steam railway, Balloon Fiesta, LV. "The" Dam, Zion, Bryce and ????? I'd like to add Midland TX to visit the Chaparral Museum located in a wing of the Petroleum Museum (we were at the 12 hours of Sebring rainiest in 1965 to see their victory).

One thing to note. My dealer thought that being towed would add miles to the Cherokee but apparently it does not which I am really glad for.
Though I will keep up with approximate towing mileage on top of driving miles for any maintenance related things

I would have been really surprised had it added mileage. Although some vehicles have that problem and they have to pull a fuse, any vehicle with Neutral in the transfer case doesn't have to be that way. Our Colorado, Tahoe and Escape didn't count any mileage. The Escape had the transmission in neutral and ignition to ACC. Colorado and Tahoe were turned off and key out with transmission in Park (transfer case in N of course).

I congratulate you id on getting that installed. Previously, I could not identify where the heck that BL switch was but I just had another look and found it. That job must have been very tricky. I still have doubts about breaking into that circuit there as that switch has many other functions apart from putting on the lights, such as engine starting and getting out of park. That's why I chose the route I took at the back.

BTW, I forgot to mention that I installed the RVi toad charger so the supplementary brake (an RViBrake2) is just plugged into the center console outlet.

You mention having to get the Jeep into neutral before connecting electrical to the RV. That implies your 12v feed is truly constant. I was surprised to find that the 12v feed from our Thor Tuscany is switched via its ACC/Run which means I do not have to worry about uncoupling that wire in the event we are overnighting in a pull through.

I am now faced with the task of fitting the Demco Base Plate but that will have to wait a while 'til my broken wrist has healed a bit more.

Happy and safe travels on your vacation.

Martin

Re: Blue Ox Baseplate for Trailhawk

Interesting points for anyone considering using a 12V feed from the RV.

1) In ldsoles1066's case, the Neutral procedure cannot be completed if the 12V is applied. And even if the RV's 12V supply is switched, the RV's ACC/RUN needs to be OFF.

2) In your case, it reminds people to be aware of parasitic drain such as in the case of using a toad charger. However, a switched 12V supply eliminates that issue.

For it is just a procedural thing so as long as I do things on right order then all is good

Speaking of procedural, have you guys ever popped a fuse hooking up the electrical while either the RV or the toad were running?

Ok I've done it. I don't any more. Every once in a while I'd blow a fuse on the RV side. Never understood why.
