Break in and first service

Just turned 1000 miles. I remember on earlier vehicles, there was an oil change early on around that point. What's the recommended first service interval? Dealer seemed to indicate wouldn't be until the first oil change around 5k? Is that right?

Re: Break in and first service

Ask ten people and you will get 12 opinions. That's why Jeep gave you an owner's manual. Read it and follow the recommendations from the people who designed and built your vehicle.

Yeah, well it's telling me 10,000 miles. That seems rather long. If there are any metal bits or wear from engine internals, seems like that could really do some damage after that long.

Re: Break in and first service

I changed mine at 2-3k, then followed regular intervals (10k) but with synthetic.

Does changing first oil early help? Maybe ... Does it hurt? Definitely not. If you are thinking about it than I would just do it and move on.

Did my first change at 1200 and went to pennzoil ultra platinum and on a 6-7k change cycle, once in fall and once in spring. I think a lot of this depends on how long you keep a car. If you change cars every 2-3years than who cares 10k interval and forget about it. If you are going to keep it 10+ years than a little earlier changes and synthetics certainly cant hurt.

At say 2,000 revolutions per minute, how many minutes of driving do you think it would take for any damage to be done? By 1,000 miles any damage that was going to be done, would be done.

Does your vehicle have the mileage minder? If so, the owner's manual should say a maximum of 10,000 miles. Most will come up for an oil change quite a bit sooner.

But as noted, changing the oil sooner than recommended by the manufacturer won't hurt. I might make make you feel better and won't cost much. Will it do anything for your car, probably not.

Oil filter is supposed to trap those.

keep your receipts for the oil and filter you purchase and keep a log of when you perform the changes. There is also place to log your own maintenance on the mopar ownerconnect website if you want to put it there also.

Re: Break in and first service

I'm from the get that shit out early camp. There's gonna be wear metals in there shedding from parts seating and mating, the filter catches most of it, but there's a lot still floating around that the filter didn't get. Just look at a used oil report on a new engine and you'll see what i'm saying. Will it hurt the engine? Probably not, but i don't want that shit in there. Maybe its a feel good thing. If i spend 40 grand for something i can dump another $25 and change the oil early. And feel better.

You might find your oil life monitor triggers the first change a little early. My ex's 09 Liberty came on under 3,000 miles, after that it was just about double.

Like someone said ask 10 people get 12 answers. Make mine 13.-Rockydee.

Re: Break in and first service

I've been around engines for a while now and would subscribe to the 3000 mile oil change on the 60's, 70's and into the 80's engines. Then something happened, Japan tought us to build better engines by paying attention to clearances. Since the 80's I've been going by the owners manual for oil changes. Usually there were two recommendations, depending on how you drive. Since my trips were always high mileage I tended to go with the higher recommendation. Since owning two Corvettes I figured the engineers were smarter than I and started using their recommendations.

I have friends that change oil every 3000 miles. My car, following the manufactures recommendations will last, trouble free, for as long as my friends and I won't be wasting my money.

Just my $.02 worth.
