Cherokee '15 - nav antenna alternative

My sister, let's call her Nimrod, just bought a 2015 Cherokee. She got it loaded but forgot to test the height of her smaller-than-normal garage. Of course, first time she pulls into the garage, the Nav system antenna (8") is too tall and scrapes the top of her garage. I recommended she move but I thought I'd ask if anyone has a better idea. So, is there an alternative antenna (shorter) or other solution? Please help. Thank you.

Re: Cherokee '15 - nav antenna alternative

You can buy a shark fin color match cover from virtualgarage.com for about $97, which is what I have, or a stubby antenna for about $20 off ebay or Amazon. Both just screw in to OEM base, may have some radio reception degrade depending on where you live.

I have NAV + Sirrius, and changed my stick to Shark Fin. Works fine - no issues.

Go for it.

Re: Cherokee '15 - nav antenna alternative

Personally, I would be careful changing to a shark fin antenna. I understand the problem on the low garage as my garage is quite small. You can see in my avatar picture the carpet I mounted on my garage walls because my front doors rub on the walls when opened. I can not open my back doors at all when my Cherokee is in my garage. I never found the answer to the small garage and not only do I have the antenna problem but I also have to be careful in opening my lift gate as it hits my opened garage door. I just am very careful driving in and out of my small garage and with opening the lift gate. The purpose of my post is to share with you the contents of a few emails I exchanged with Visual Garage (the maker of the shark fin antenna) when I was thinking of purchasing a shark fin antenna. A lot of Michigan (where I live) is still rural and they cautioned me that changing to a shark fin antenna would most likely degrade my reception. Their suggestion was that if I could live with my present situation that I leave well enough alone. I figured that if the manufacture cautioned me about degrading the signal knowing that they could lose a sale there must be something to their warning. Upon their recommendation I did not make the purchase/change.

*******Part of my problem may be that my custom ordered Cherokee Limited has the ADII package which includes the off road suspension. I also have the eighteen inch wheels and tires. The off road suspension has as a part of it a lift which causes my Cherokee to sit higher. (sits the same height as a TrailHawk plus the eighteen inch wheels and tires)

The Trailhawk with OEM 17” wheels sits ˝” taller than the Limited with ADII and 18” wheels. I live in the mountains of NV and didn’t detect and difference in reception with my Virtual Garage shark fin, same drop outs, dead spots and fringe reception.

Let's agree to disagree.

Both. And BTW, the so called official specs changed several times during the first year. Part of that was due to Chrysler wanting the same brand tires (but not necessarily size or tread design) on the regular Cherokees as the Firestones on the TrailHawk. Firestone was one of many companies who refused to rev up production for a company who had just come out of bankruptcy and had an uncertain future. Chrysler ended up going with Continentals on the regular Cherokees as they were the only tire company willing to take the risk. My custom ordered Limited Cherokee was one of the first of the new Cherokees built. I have several Chrysler brochures, copies of the official Jeep website, and several magazine review/articles that all disagree with each other over the specs, options, and option packages available. Heck, they couldn't even agree with each other over the tint of the headlight covers. I pretty much ordered my Cherokee blind as no one was sure of anything. Even my salesman and I had a major disagreement over being able to order a radio with built in navigation vs. having to add navigation later via software.

BTW, I watched for months the nightly test runs out US 23 and I 75 north from Auburn Hills conducted by Rouche engineering, the NASCAR people.

Re: Cherokee '15 - nav antenna alternative

I too special ordered my 2015 Cherokee Limited, loaded in July 2014. My only complaint with the radio is the AM reception. On a weak signal there is a lot of "popping". Thanks to this forum and the technical section I found a TSB that addressed my issue. The dealer, whom I talked to about this two months ago, didn't realise there was a TSB out. Tomorrow I take it in to get my new antenna complete with base. Ill let you know if it improves the reception.

I like the looks of the fin but I'm staying with Jeep recommendation.

Just my $.02 worth.

Re: Cherokee '15 - nav antenna alternative

Had the TSB performed on the antenna and what a difference it made in radio reception. I can now receive AM stations that previously were unheard and without the annoying "popping" noise. Thanks again to JeepGarage.com for the great information available to maintain and keep our rides running great.
