Re: Cherokee lost SUV of the year due to it's 9-speed transmission

Kind of a cheesy article IMO.

Granted the CR-V is a good vehicle and Honda has very good drivetrain engineers. But it doesn't go anywhere Jeep has gone with the Cherokee. Without getting into a full-out comparison, (and really they aren't in the same class IMO) the CR-V does not have a 2-speed PTU with neutral, or a locker, or 4500 pounds towing capability, or V6, and on and on. The 2015 CR-V is probably like the previous ones: nice car but still boring. I haven't seen the 2015 but if it's like the previous years the interior is probably noisy, uncomfortable and spartan looking.

And for you RVers out there, I've heard the 2015 CR-V is not towable 4-down anymore due to the new CVT. I have not checked this out but it's what I've heard. IMO that leaves the Cherokee as a top toad contender given its weight, gas mileage, comfort, AWD, and AD2/ADL.

I believe the Pilot or Crosstour is in the WK2 class.
The CRV stands for California Redemption Value.
When you get done with the little s***box, you take it to a used car dealer and they have to give you at least the CRV value.

Remember this award comes to you from the folks that declared the Chevrolet Vega the car of the year, the Chrysler Potty Cruiser, the Ford [anal] Probe, the AMC/Renault Alliance, the Chrysler K(rap) cars, the Chevrolet Citation, the Dodge Omni/Plymouth Horizon, the Mustang II, etc etc so that Honda is in "excellent and appropriate company"

So that is Motor Trend's opinion. I've read a few other (Australian) Car Articles which mention a very different result.

Before deciding upon the KL Cherokee (Limited) I test drove the Honda CR-V (Luxury). I've had two CR-V's in the past (1999 & 2006) and I really "wanted" to love the 2014 CR-V, but after driving the KL Cherokee it was a no brainer. The KL won in every area, ....but that's just my opinion

Hi,

I think you nailed the characteristics of the CRV; no offence to the owners, and Honda being top-notch in terms of overall quality, but their new release is nowhere near the KL's territory.

You would be also correct with the CVT limitations impacting towing. I have a vehicle (Altima) with that type of tranny, and towing capacity is virtually non-existent (as in: not recommended).

I think what makes the CRV, arguably, a better vehicle in rankings is cargo storage. But I am not in the segment for that, so I personally could not care less about that criteria.

Lastly, let's finally drop the topic of the transmission. It finally becomes clear that the 9-speed requires some effort to guarantee its longevity, and smooth operation. I am not surprised that the reviewers did not pay attention to that, why would they? After all, we have accustomed ourselves to the "don't make me think" principle in design, marketing, and sadly, engineering.

I would say, the KL scored really well in that test.

Now, the waiting game continues in my case...

Finally, someone who gets it. Chrysler/Fiat caused their own problem with this. They were out to increase sales by making a Jeep that would appeal to the average person on the street. Hence we got the soccer mom, mall crawler, 4 cylinder, FWD version of the Cherokee and people who were gosh darn so surprised it did not perform/operate like their foreign economy car or worse yet their foreign luxury car. These people didn't belong in or should have bought a Jeep in the first place. Jeep needs to go back to making Jeeps for the Jeep enthusiast. Not Jeeps for Wall Street.
