Chime when shifting into Reverse

Hi Guys,

Something started happening to me this morning when I left for work. Going to provide as much detail as possible so hopefully it can help identify the culprit.

I get down to my garage and place some items in the cargo area, opening the lift gate from the Fob. I then close the gate utilizing the interior button, unlock the car with the handle, get in and place my bags on the passenger seat. I start the car using the push button start, no issues starting. When I move the gear shift to reverse, I get a single chime. I place it in park, then try again. Chimes again. I check the stored messages to find it empty. Confused, I start my drive to work with no issue.

I get to my office and park in my spot, then place the car in reverse again to hear the Chime. no idea what's causing it.

I don't have the parksense/safety packages in the TH, but I do have the reverse camera. Any ideas? I don't want to have to go to the dealership for this, as it's not breaking the car, only annoying.

Re: Chime when shifting into Reverse

Went out for lunch, didn't use the fob to remote start the car, didn't do a Uconnect remote start, didn't use it to unlock the doors. Started it normally and put it in reverse, no Chime.

She has a mind of her own.

Could it be that your bags are just heavy enough on the passenger seat to make the computer think that seat belt should be fastened?

I thought of that too, as that was changed this afternoon. when I went out. Problem is the weight of the bags has changed so it will be hard to replicate until tomorrow. I'll keep that in mind.

But - wouldn't I get a warning somewhere? Also, wouldn'd it have continued in drive?

Re: Chime when shifting into Reverse

I may have found the answer to this. I am short so until the easy enter/easy exit seat has reached its destination it is a stretch for me to press firmly on the brake pedal. Last night I discovered that just lightly touching the brake pedal is enough to allow the Cherokee to start but then I get the chime. If I wait until the driver's seat is in place and I firmly press on the brake pedal I do not get the chime.

My 2015 Cherokee Latitude has been doing this a few times too. I don't know what causes it to start, but once it does it keeps on doing it till I turn the vehicle off and let it set for 15 to 20 minutes and then it quits. I have tried restarting it immediately, but that doesn't help. I have remote start and power lift gate, but don't think either one of them comes into play causing this. It has happened 4 times for since I bought it on the 23rd of Oct but I only have about 750 miles on it--have not driven that much. The dealer that does my service had his shop foreman tech call star and they had not heard of it. I will try the "light touch" on the brake when starting to see if that sets it off--would be nice to know what causes it.

Re: Chime when shifting into Reverse

Had my Lattitude for about 3 weeks. Lately it sometimes chimes for no apparent reason. Sometimes it chimes right after starting and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it chimes after shifting into reverse and sometimes it doesn't. (MY foot is always firmly on the brake). Sometimes it chimes after turning off the ignition and sometimes it doesn't. The only options the car has is the V6 and a cd player so none of the added features that might cause the chiming are on the car. Has anyone spoken to their dealer or Chrysler about this? I've also read that this could be signs of transmission problems. This car has 450 miles on it so that would be a bummer. Can anyone comment on this? Thanks and Merry X Mas.

Re: Chime when shifting into Reverse

I have a 2015 Jeep Cherokee Latitude which also chimes in reverse sometimes and after it sits for awhile it doesn't. I usually know when it is going to do it after I start it and it goes thru the checking all the warning lights it will do a final chime at the end. When it does that I know it will chime in reverse. I will also have it chime when turning the engine off for no apparent reason.

Re: Chime when shifting into Reverse gone

Took my 2015 Latitude in for it's 2nd free oil change in the beginning of January and had the latest software updates installed. These updates were instrument panel software and power train software. It chimed once more about 1 week later and never chimed again. I hope others will find this helpful.
