E85 vs 87

My Cherokee now has over 12k on it. Did a test of Gas mileage of E85 vs. 87.
Up here in MN the difference is .90 a gallon
Started with an empty tank. As a sample test did 4 Fill-ups of E85.
I used Fuelly for recording of my mileage

Lost about 4.5 MPG.

Using a spreadsheet. At .90 a gallon, still come out ahead using E85. Would save about $4.00 a tank full.

For right I have decided not to use E85. It is hard to find when you are on the road all the time. Don't want to mix.

Anyone else tried E85?

I don't know which engine you have but I have a Cherokee Limited II with the 3.2L engine. E85 is not recommended for use in it.

Why are you running E85 in a non Flex Fuel vehicle? That is not smart. Your fuel system is not designed for that stuff.

I use 100% gas vs. the 10% ethanol (E90) that is standard at most if not all stations in Illinois. Several stations offer 100% gas in my town in central Illinois.
It will range between .10-.12 cents more per gallon than 87 octane E90.
I get much better gas mileage with non ethanol gas.
There is a net savings on each fill up about 4%.

From the owner's manual. Pertains to both 4 and 6 cylinder engines.

E-85 Usage In Non-Flex Fuel Vehicles
Non-Flex Fuel Vehicles (FFV) are compatible with gasoline
containing 10% ethanol (E10). Gasoline with higher
ethanol content may void the New Vehicle Limited
Warranty.
If a Non-FFV vehicle is inadvertently fueled with E-85
fuel, the engine will have some or all of these symptoms:
• Operate in a lean mode.
• OBD II “Malfunction Indicator Light” on.
• Poor engine performance.
• Poor cold start and cold drivability.
• Increased risk for fuel system component corrosion.

To fix a Non-FFV vehicle inadvertently fueled once with
E-85 perform the following:
• Drain the fuel tank (see your authorized dealer).
• Change the engine oil and oil filter.
• Disconnect and reconnect the battery to reset the
engine controller memory.
More extensive repairs will be required for prolonged
exposure to E-85 fuel.

10% ethanol equals E10 not E90.

EXX the number is the percent of ethanol in the mix.

E85 is 85 percent ethanol. Should never be used in a non Flex-Fuel engine.

Cars since the early 2000's have been fine corrosion wise with E85. A lot of people have a piggyback ecu tuner installed so they can cpnvert their car to run on it. If tuned properly there is almost zero loss in fuel economy and a decent power increase. I wouldn't be doing it in a new vehicle though...

Only if they have the correct fuel lines. Also, the fuel injectors are different for FF vehicles. Unless the vehicle was made to be FF it is not wise to run E85. Period. Can you - yes. Should you - no. You can not tune it to achieve no MPG loss either. Anyone who claims they have is bs'ing folks.

Fuel lines in almost every vehicle since 2000 have been built to be alcohol resistant. As an example 2006 to 2008 f150's can be had with a ffv 5.4 or a non ffv 5.4, the fuel lines are the same, the ffv just has a sensor to figure out the mixture of ethonal to gas. Yes the injectors are different but only because the ffv injectors have to flow about 30% more fuel. Tuned was not the word I wanted, tuning can get you close fuel economy wise but the engine has to be built for it, it has to have higher compression to take advantage of the higher octane. If auto manufacturers would tune their e85 vehicles properly all of them would make more power on e85, but so far ford is the only one who has figured that out, and that was only for a couple years.
