Engine Stop HELP!

Hello,

My husband and I just purchased our first Jeep. It's a 2016 Jeep Cherokee Limited. We are having a real issue with this auto engine stop every time we stop at a light or stop sign. It almost feels dangerous because of the hesitation of the engine coming back on before you pull out into traffic. Also, it doesn't seem like this would be good for the engine to be starting and stopping... isn't that additional wear and tear on the engine? We would not have bought this vehicle had we known about this. Is there a way to disable it or put it to "off" as a default? Is there any "benefit" to this? We are feeling disappointed with our first Jeep experience. :-(

Re: Engine Stop HELP!

There have been many discussions on this. It's definitely a polarizing topic.
Short answer: you cannot permanently disable the feature, or default it to Off. Either get used to it, or train yourself to poke the Off button every time you start the Jeep.

Word on the street is many more brands & models are going to get this "feature" in the coming years. The Cherokee is just among the first (but not *the* first).

Still, complain to FCA and your dealer. In the short term neither will do anything about it, but if enough people complain to the point it's an issue potentially affecting sales, maybe they'll do a software update to make it optional.

Brad.

Re: Engine Stop HELP!

My Jeep does not have auto start/stop and I was glad for that when I bought it. Subsequently I bought a 2015 Jaguar and it has that dredded auto start/stop. However, after using it for a while, I got comfortable with it and learned a few fine points to help: (1) just a slight release of brake pressure restarted the car......so sometimes I anticipate a "green" and restart a few seconds before launch, (2) auto stop doesn't happen if the final brake pressure is very light when the vehicle finally stops, so sometimes I lighten up as I roll to a stop and the engine doesn't stop. Having learned that, I am really warming up to auto start/stop........it takes a while to get get comfortable with it but the restart is amazingly fast.

That leaves the open point about impact on the battery, starter and engine. Time will tell, but I'm not worrying about that.

I don't expect the auto manufacturers to back off to allowing a default "off" if they've certified city driving mileage with auto start/stop functioning properly.

It may grow on you over time, as it does work reliably....and very fast...in my car.

YMMV

Re: Engine Stop HELP!

^^ Agree with Desert Hiker.

A driver can learn to use Stop/Start to their advantage. Wish I had it on my other vehicle too. Enjoy the quiet while waiting at long traffic lights, etc. Mine restarts quickly and I normally beat others off the line when the light turns green.

On wear and tear, consider that gas golf carts have used Stop/Start for many years. It's also been used on cars in Europe for years too. FCA has beefed up the parts that take the stress like battery, starter, etc.

Re: Engine Stop HELP!

Vehicles with the ESS have a heavy duty starter, battery and ring gear to cater for the additional usage so no issues there.

The ESS will also only kick in if the vehicle has travelled at more than 5mph since it last started, so when you reckon the lights will change release the pedal until it starts then hold it down again until ready to go, it will not stop again until the next intersection.

Also if you just hold the brakes enough to hold the vehicles you can stop it from engaging.

And lastly, if you disconnect the wire from the bonnet detection switch on the mudguard it will disable the ESS as it wont engage if it thinks the bonnet is open.

Must be something wrong with your jeep I would take it to the dealer. My wifes starts so fast you cant even tell it wasn't running at a light even in below freezing temps. The only way you even notice its not running is if you look at the tach.

Whats this bonnet you speak of? Ive seen a lot of threads about this I think many would like to disconnect that if it doesn't cause a cell or check engine light.
