I'm just shaking my head. We know about it - we read more about it - we are interested in technology - I already installed the update on my Jeep but I can tell you right away down the street my neighbors - have NO clue about this what can happen to their Jeeps - They SHOULD do a RECALL or a mandatory update for every JEEP on the street. Hope this goes PUBLIC !!!!

Will talk to my neighbors and update their system for them.

Completely agree. I'll be sending angry Twitter messages and emails to FCA about their firmware upgrade process. If UConnect already has data capabilities, they should allow Over The Air updates which can be delayed for a few days until they are mandatory.

This is pretty freaky. I wonder if this affects insurance.

And I'm tipping that Jeep won't be the only manufacturer affected, many others use Uconnect and I'm sure the alternatives probably aren't more robust!

Some of the alternatives are far less robust.

Face it, if someone with the technology available to a government wants into your Jeep, they WILL get into your Jeep.

The best Jeep and the other vehicle software companies can do is try to keep out amateurs, but unfortunately with some of the leaks recently, the amateurs now know how to put something into a computer [requires physical access], that no software on the face of the planet can get out. Look up UEFI.

Its actually easy to appease the government and keep the owners/manufactures safe and thats by creating two systems that can communicate but one does not control the other system's operation. Meaning the entertainment system should be on a separate electrical system than the mechanical system. Should something happen, the mechanical system could send the entertainment system a distress signal that then allows uConnect to notify incase of an accident, driver assistance, etc.

Re: Hackers take control over Jeep Cherokee via uConnect

I really think people are all excited about nothing. What the news is not saying because they want a sensational story is that this hack works a bit like sending a text to a cell phone. I can not send a text to thousands of people all at once unless I know the thousands of phone numbers involved where as I can easily send you a text if I know your specific phone number. People are forgetting that the so called hacker knew the specific location and the specific radio identification numbers of the Jeep used in the demonstration. The hacker did not just pick a Jeep at random and invade its radio.
