Do you know if the trans re-flash is RRT-15-003? I'm getting that done next week, but would like to see what's it says in the RRT document.

I've got 6K miles on mine and it has been running flawlessly. Don't think I want them flashing the trans. I don't like kicking sleeping dogs.

Traveler0980: I agree. "If it ain't broke....." But mine is. I occasionally have the 2nd gear wobble, and the shifts are still rough, even now at 8000 miles. So I'm willing to give it a try. But if yours is fine, I would pass on it.

My Cherokee is 15 months old and has been next to perfect. I have never had and never intend to have any of the transmission flashes done. I happen to live in an area that is only a few miles from Chrysler headquarters. I had an opportunity a few nights ago, strictly by accident, to talk with a Chrysler transmission engineer. He said the majority of the problems with the 9 speed transmission are with the assembly. Chrysler has discovered that if the 9 speed is not assembled in a totally sterile environment and any shavings get inside that transmission there will be problems. Tolerances are just too tight in the 9 speed to allow for any shavings. Software flashes will not do anything about shaving inside the transmission. That is why getting a good transmission is hit and miss. Some transmissions were fortunate enough not to get any shavings inside. The engineer went on to say the only real fix if you get a bad transmission is to have it replaced. He also said that 4 cylinder Cherokee models tended to be more problem prone. Of course this whole conversation was off the record and would be denied.

Per other members who had the update done today, it appears the new update is indeed RRT 15-003.

I pray, this update will apply to my diesel too. Shifting of the 9-speed tranny is driving me nuts and Im almost ready to send the whole car back.

I put all my hope in this update.

Very interesting. I haven't had any problems with mine but, if that is indeed the root of the problem, why don't they take preventive action and replace the really bad ones? They could easily check them out, at one of the recalls they are doing now.

I wonder if this may not be true for some 8HP70's as well...me and one other 2015 SRT owner had transmission replacements authorized by Chrysler with "internal defect" cited, both ~2000 miles on the clock, due to rough downshifting and "clunking" noises. Maybe unrelated given the 9 speed has gotten the majority of the bad press, but realistically loose metal in any tight-tolerance assembly is going to be problematic. Wouldn't this be 100% a ZF issue and not Chrysler? Or does Chrysler do anything inside the transmission after receiving from the supplier?

FCA is the supplier, the transmission is manufactured by FCA under license of ZF with FCA proprietary software and hard mounting points on case.

If i remember correctly the 2014 8HP70s were just a strait buy from ZF germany, the 2015 8HP70s are now manufactured here by Chysler. So maybe possible they are using similar non sterile enviroment as they are not ZF built anymore. There is a thread on here some where that talks about the cut over from zf built to chysler built for the 8hp70s.

I stand entirely corrected. That explains a lot potentially.
