It's bad enough, it's going to have the JEEP brand. Please don't call it Cherokee, please don't insult all previous, current and future owners of Cherokees and Grand Cherokees.
Wow...the Cherokee is fugly at best and at worst the ugliest and most bastardized interpretation of an iconic brand I've ever seen. I am ordering a 2014 JGC in the next allotment and my wife was waiting to replace her '08 Liberty with the new Cherokee. Not anymore. I wouldn't plunk down my hard earned $$ for that POS. So disapointing. Jeep just lost a sure thing sale.
Unlike the -real- Cherokee, and this thing is a poser. The Cherokee earned it's off road credentials and was very capable. It also had a very utilitarian personality that people valued. I never had to thing twice about taking the Cherokee off road or on unplowed roads. This thing however shouldn't be allowed off of the asphalt.
Jeep... it's a bold styling experiment. Call it anything you want just don't call it a Cherokee.
front-end appearance aside, we don't know anything about this Cherokee's offroad abilities. Aside from the Wranglers, we will never see the new vehicles with the simplistic automotive engineering that the XJ had. That simplicity enabled so much of the cool 4x4 aftermarket tweaking. Compared to the XJ and even the WK1, the WK2 doesn't have that many mods and probably never will with all the electonic doodads and such.
The new Cherokee , while it is in desperate need of a front end collision, could certainly be up to the task of tackling rugged fire roads, beach driving, moderately deep snow, and the occasional river ford. It won't, probably ever be a great rock crawler or mud bogger, and that isn't really what most people want. If you want those things, get a wrangler or a 1995 Cherokee.
I don't need a history lesson. I'm a XJ original owner... been following the platform since 1987 when the 4.0L was available. I bought one in 1991 when the 4.0L HO was released and still have it.
My first mistake was not buying its replacement, a 2001 XJ 60th Anniversary Model, the last year.
My second mistake was not buying a ZJ or WJ Grand Cherokee, the last years before Jeep decided to install IFS.
I deviated from the brand and bought a 2005 Toyota Land Cruiser. An experience in its own realm.
None of the aforementioned are considered FULL-SIZE SUV's.
I am not giving you a history lesson. Just simply stating that you are wrong that the commander was the Cherokees replacement.
The XK might not be called a full size SUV but it was jeeps largest vehicle which they wanted to compete with Expeditions and Tahoe's of the world.
That's awesome... I find it amusing Jeep's defensive stance on the definition of failure.
It's not like they haven't experienced this before with the rollout of the Liberty and Commander.. maybe that's what they meant by saying "Don't judge a book by its cover."
In the second picture the black "cherokee" has molding that runs near the top of the front fender. In the released JEEP picture, there is no such thing.
Maybe the middle headlight was a joke, and was supposed to simulate the XJ square headlight being brought back from the "real cherokee" days...maybe it'll say "since 1984" on it:lol:
I only dream that this is a joke/ hoax and the black "cherokee" doesn't just have a different trim level on it that brings the molding up a bit
p.s the back end is hideous too.
...And the black cherokee has flush mounted top light, the JEEP official picture looks like it's sunk in a bit. Black cherokee top light doesn't have any orange part to it, JEEP pic does. But we've seen JEEP use black tape before (my WK2 peeps). I'm just trying to come up with more hopes that they didn't $%#@ the Cherokee.
This might also stir up real JEEP fans , just like adding square headlights to a Wrangler

That's funny... I saw a pic from one of these websites indicating the redesigned Liberty/Cherokee has a higher molding line.
But yeah. I can see Jeep trying to connect the old with the new through emotional heritage connections, as opposed through utilitarian design. How else will they transition the brand. It doesn't mean I'll play in their sandbox.
I can still buy a new vibrating Toyota 4Runner.
The backend is survivable... in fact the car overall isn't terrible... it's that awful headlight arrangement and the bent over slots. It looks like a 6 eyed broken nose anime cartoon character...
Move those 'eyebrows" down to the other lights... and move the slots down so the top stops at the bend... voila... whole new appearance.
This rendered picture has all the characteristics of the black cherokee (exhibit b); moulding that rises, no orange in the headlight, flush mounted top lights.
The Cherokee will never be the Cherokee of old...they came out with a 4 door Wrangler with a hardtop option to fulfill that need. Now you've got (arguably) something better than an XJ...you've got a 4 door Wrangler. Now you need a more streetable mid-level, small SUV to compete in a market FULL of things like the Highlander and CR-V, Escape, etc. This might very well be the answer. Honestly, I think it's better looking than the first gen Liberty.
Unfortunately, they will cross a lot of XJ fans with this. XJ fans just need to realize that the real replacement for them is the 4 door JK, and not the newly labeled "Cherokee".

Right on...this vehicle was designed to compete in the CUV class [CRX, RAV4, Equinox, Escape, Santa Fe, Terrain, Forester etc.] which has over 1 million sales per year and helps manufacturers meet Obama's environmental wacko CAFE standards.
True hardcore Cherokee fans have the four door Wrangler Unlimited and the
base Laredo GC to choose from.
Milous is the man but I'm surprised that he does't know this.
