Is there anyway to disable the start/stop feature on my 2016 Cherokee Limited?

curious, what is this feature you speak of? I have a 2014 GC and the only thing I can think of is when I stop on a hill, put it in park and release the brake, it rolls back a couple inches. Not enough to hit anything but when your wife is standing in the open door with one leg in, one leg out, she sure let me know when the A-frame konked her head!

I believe all cars with the hated Start/Stop feature always default to enabled each time it is started up. My Mercedes does it also. Even when programming the custom driving modes, it enables every time the car is started. A Mercedes tech told me that is a federal requirement. It's a way for the manufacturers to squeeze a bit more mileage for the EPA and CAFE standards. It may appear on all cars within a couple of years. In the meantime, until someone figures out how to hack the system, we have to press the A button to turn it off each time we get into the car. YUK!

Why not have purchased a SmartCar for NYC, or a Prius? I live north of Boston and needed it for the winter weather. My 2015 Limited has ESS and I don't even notice it now. I will say, though, that a user setting to delay it activating after meeting the threshold to apply it would be much more user-friendly and contribute to its acceptability. I mean a few selections like 0 seconds, 5 seconds, or 15 seconds after coming to a stop (where the speed of the vehicle allows ESS to activate) is all it takes. For me, I roll stop thru stop signs more than I did in the past!

I have ESS on another vehicle (not my 2014 Trailhawk). It also will not auto-stop if the brakes are feathered to extremely light presssure at final stop. In addition, if engaged, the ESS will auto-start if brake pressure is feathered down to almost zero while at a full stop. {I'm not sure if the Jeep ESS does this.} Using these feathering techniques, I now can fully control the ESS and have come to accept it. BTW, the ESS restarts so fast (a small fraction of a second) that it doesn't affect normal driving - only quick racing style launches.

For whatever it's worth on my girlfriend's 2016 BMW 328 I X Drive, the SALESMAN disabled it for her before she even picked it up. He was aware how much she disliked the feature from the previous one. Not convinced FCM is btight enough to provide a defeat like that. That based on the lousy job they''ve done on all of the electronic sccessories on my 14 KL.

The Cherokee KL version of SmartStopStart is now shipping.

There is a FAQ on my website below.

This is a plug-and-play memory device that plugs into the diagnostic port under the dash in a few seconds and then remembers the last state of the ESS disable button each time you start the vehicle.

I am happy to answer questions.

I've had the SmartStopStart in our 2015 Trailhawk for about a month. Works as advertised and the install is as simple as any plug-in could be.

The FCA claim of 1mpg in city driving may be the case under certain conditions, say where the stops are at long lights. However in the case of multiple short-duration stops, like at stop signs in the country or certain stop-and-go driving the effect on mpg is in the other direction.

Had it in our Cherokee Trailhawk now for over a month. It's great! Whenever I run into a long-stop situation, like long traffic lights, I just put S/S back on for the duration, then turn off again when leaving the city traffic. :)

2019 Cherokee Support

We now have support for the 2019 Cherokee Limited, Overland and Trailhawk Elite only. On these 2019's the module plugs in under the driver's seat in a minute or two. All engine options are supported on these models.

Sorry we do not support the 2019 Latitude, Latitude Plus and standard Trailhawk yet.
