Installed Aftermarket Hitch and Brake Controller. NON-TOW Package Limited

As the title says. I successfully completed the install in my 2014 Cherokee Limited V6 4x4.

All parts bought from E-Trailer.

Curt class III hitch, Cherokee 4 Pin Harness, Universal Brake Controller Kit and P3 Brake Controller.

Installing the hitch and 4 pin are easy and there are videos on Etrailer for this car.

There are no Videos for installing the Brake Controller nor wiring.

If you watch a video of another newer model vehicle it will give you a basic idea of how to run the wiring and setting up the new 7pin/4pin connector at the rear.

The hard part is getting to the Cold Brake Wire. This is the wire that tells the controller that you are applying the brakes.

If you get upside down in the drivers foot well and look up you will see a blue adapter with a white top and has four wires coming out of it above your brake pedal. This is the brake switch. If you give it a quarter turn it will come off and give you room to strip back the wire coverings. The brake switch is self calibrating. So when you put it back in place (DO NOT PRESS ON THE BRAKE PEDAL)

There are 4 wires. You only want to use the Green Wire with the Light Green stripe.

FYI: There is another green wire but it has a neon yellow stripe. Very easy to get confused.

Not gonna lie, it was not easy getting up there. The harness is pretty high in the dash and its really hard to see. Its a little tricky getting the blue brake switch back in place, but it can be done. You can't see so you have to go by feel. Get it back in the slot, make sure its sitting flush and quarter twist and its locked in place.

Seems like a lot to go through in time and expense for 2000 lb. towing capacity. Install looks great though.

Thanks. I just recently purchased a jayco pop up with a 2000lb weight. About 2500 if I load it with a lot of crap. It can go up to 2900 gross if I REALLY loaded it up.

It came with e-brakes. Might as well as use them. My V6 4x4 limited build sheet has all the HD cooling. Only thing missing was the higher gear ratio. I'm not even sweating the extra weight.

Yeah, I was bummed our dealer didn't order any 2x4's with towing. Such a shame. $495 well worth it imo, just to have 'in case'.

We do have the 3.2l engine, which I think has the cooler and a diff transmission ratio. Is there anything else in the 'tow package' that was included that would not allow the vehicle the full 4500 lb tow rating if I bought the parts to add it on myself? (at a much higher price than 495 ). Info from the posts I've read seems to be spotty and a bit unclear.

There's a higher gear ratio in the tow package models.

so the 2.4L has one ratio, the 3.2L comes with another. Are you saying that the tow package on a 3.2L differs from the 3.251 Final Drive Ratio that comes standard w/ the 3.2?

again, this is why I think the info here is confusing on the subject. Everyone keeps saying it, but I don't think I've seen the numbers. Can anyone with a 2015 3.2L and the factory tow package confirm what their build sheet says?

If you go to the jeep website and build a jeep it will show you.

Did that. saw the same that came on my car, and strangely enough it also said towing capacity still 2000 lbs. Perhaps other models show correctly, but the Cherokee limited doesn't seem to.

Found a post from Feb 2014 by Desert Hiker that states this:
If you order the V-6, 3.2L option, the tow package will force you from the 3.251 final drive ratio up to 3.517.

not sure if that is still true or not. I've seen nothing official to verify.

That looks good. Did you have your dealer do the flash to activate the trailer sales code wiring? How much did they charge?

On the Limited 4 x 4 (not on 4 x 2) with tow package:

3.517 Final Drive Ratio (Unavailable with some configurations)

This is from Jeep.com build page.

Sorry guess I should have specified 4x2. Does the 4x2 not have the higher capacity, even with the factory towing package?

I did it all myself. Not as difficult as it looks.

Bought the hitch, standard 4plug wiring, and the universal brake controller harness from Etrailer. All aftermarket. With the aftermarket route there is no flashing from the dealer.

If you want I can list exact part numbers when I get home. Went camping with the family and friends in our new popup camper.

FYI. I did just tow a 2500lb camper, 700lbs people and 100lb German shepherd. The Cherokee pulled like a champ. Transmission temp stayed right at 180 the whole way even up hills. Almost never went above 2k RPMs. Almost forgot the trailer was back there. Could only tell over crappy parts of the highway.
