Key Fob Issue

Hi Guys,

I have a MY2015 KL TH with the Comfort/Convenience package with the Keyless enter and go. I used the uConnect app to start the car remotely and walked out with a co-worker to demo the new ride. Yesterday (Three weeks after picking up the vehicle), I walk out to the car with the co-worker and use the handle to unlock the car so they can look in. I open the liftgate from inside the car and put my things in the trunk.

After showing them around, I press the button to activate the car from the remote start and nothing changes. I let the auto-start roll out (15 minutes) and walk away from the vehicle. I come back and try it again, only to get the "Key Fob not detected" message. Apparently between unlocking the car and trying to start it the Fob forgot what car it was for, or vice versa. I got it started by pressing the fob to the ignition and drove home. When I got home I tried to change the batteries in the old and it still did not work. Remote start, lock/unlock, panic, liftgate, nada. The other Fob works fine, and now I have to go back to my dealer to reprogram the broken one.

Has this happened to anyone else? If so, what caused it? Somewhat annoying within the first 30 days of the vehicle.

Re: Key Fob Issue

@Tibault - Very interesting. Wondering if you exposed a program bug. Or maybe it's just the RF transmitter went bad in that fob; since you were able to start the car pressing the fob against the start button which I believe uses RFID.

I'm still uneasy I can't put a spare key in my wallet that does it all. Loose the fob while out somewhere and there is no starting the car with an emergency key.

You can start it with the Uconnect app and your smartphone. No need for an emergency key. I am guessing if you could prove it was a real emergency that the Uconnect office could start it too. Now remember you said start it not drive it.

I *almost* called you on that! I believe the intention is operating the car normally with a spare/emergency key. I used to carry a spare in my wallet too and now I can't.

Re: Key Fob Issue

I would find it difficult to lose or misplace my key fobs. I bought a couple of nice leather and zipper cases for mine off of eBay. They have a sturdy spring clap for my belt loop. Once it is fastened to my belt loop you would pretty much have to somehow grab it off of my belt loop or confiscate my jeans.

Here you go:

Genuine PU Leather Car Remote Key Wallet Case Holder Cover for Grand Cherokee | eBay

I know it says Grand Cherokee but works fine for KL Cherokee as well.

Re: Key Fob Issue

My wife puts her purse on the floor behind the driver's seat. The fob is in her purse. Was surprised she was able to lock the car that way. But I hear you; can open the door using the phone app. It was nice having the do-all key in the wallet though. Just saw a news report in the last month how thieves are preferring older cars now since the immobilizers on the newer cars make it more difficult for them. And that's good, so I'm okay with losing the do-all key.

Re: Key Fob Issue

Took the KL to the dealership with both Fobs yesterday. They let me know that the Fob that stopped working is completely dead and cannot be reprogrammed. They wanted to replace it, but didn't have any in stock. So I get to go up there again on saturday to get the new one.

Could be worse, I guess. Just kinda depressing to have to deal with not a month after I pick up this factory order.

Re: Key Fob Issue

Im sure how much a key fob cost but when i got my 2014 new there was only 1 key fob so they got me another 1 and 3 months later they found the other 1 so now i have 3. They said they think you can only have 2 fobs programmed to the jeep but i tried all 3 and they all work so i keep 1 in my pocket as a spare. To make sure the lost 1 worked i took it 1 mile away from house and tried it and it worked.

Re: Key Fob Issue

New Fobs are about $400, from what the service department told me. Count yourself lucky you got a third for free.

Re: Key Fob Issue

The parts department at my dealer in Utah quoted me a price of about $265 for a new FOB including programming.
