Leaking Transmission

Just brought home a new Trailhawk, parked it in my driveway. Now I have a puddle of transmission oil under the engine. Is this a common problem ? Anyone know how to check the transmission fluid level ?

you cannot check the trans fluid.

Call the dealer have them come pick it up on their dime.

and give you a rental!

Don't drive the vehicle. Make the dealer pick it up.

Is this standard in Jeeps?

I assume there is a sensor that checks the level and warns you - but could someone please confirm the details?

Thanks

Re: Leaking Transmission

update:
I had it towed in to the dealership this morning. They quickly located a cover plate on the transmission that was leaking. They told me that the part is supposed to be machined flat and smooth to make a leak proof fit as no gaskets or sealers are used during assembly at the factory. Mine was not perfectly smooth causing it to leak. The dealership contacted Chrysler about the problem. They told me that since it is a new vehicle that Chrysler does not offer repair parts because they want the entire transmission replaced for inspection. The dealership is going to try a sealer to stop the leak, if that does not work then they will replace the transmission. I am not happy about the prospect of my transmission being replaced especially for such a minor imperfection.

I would not allow them to try a sealer. If it's not designed to use a sealer than it shouldn't have a sealer. They are going to try to seal a defective part? I would tell them to get a non defective part and replace it.

+1

I'd even take the new tranny first. As a unit it's just another bolt on part, whether it's done at the factory or the dealership.

I'm astounded that Jeep would propose replacing a transmission instead of providing a simple, external repair part. If they use sealant, then a lifetime transmission warranty would be in order. They wouldn't replace the transmission on my new TH unless it really needed it. Escalate the problem w/ Jeep.

Good Luck!!!

Re: Leaking Transmission

Agree with you all, I am concerned about how long the sealer fix will last. Also since there is no way for me to check the fluid level in the transmission I do not know how low it got. But I am also concerned about them replacing the transmission, as I would be trusting the skill of an unknown mechanic to replace a transmission that they have no experience with.
Many years ago I learned that you should not buy a vehicle the first year that it was introduced, I should have followed my instincts on this one. ( shoulda -coulda -woulda). It will be interesting to see if this turns out to be a widespread problem.
