Maintenance

I decided to check out the owner's manual and see what kind of maintenance requirements the new Cherokee had. Found some surprises and some head shakers...

Engine Oil( 2.4L ): 0W20( MOPAR/Pennzoil/Shell mentioned )
Engine oil( 3.2L ): 5W20( MOPAR/Pennzoil/Shell mentioned )
Spark Plugs( both ): 100K( most likely Iridiums )
Coolant: 150K
Transmission: ZF8/9 ATF NO change interval listed
T-Case/PTU( 4WD ): NO Fluid spec or change interval listed
Rear Diff( 4WD ): NO fluid spec or change interval listed

Was surprised to see Chrysler actually spec a 0W20. Nothing wrong with that just didn't expect it from Chrysler. Further surprised to see them mention a brand other than MOPAR. They have done it for SRT vehicles in the past with Mobil 1 but haven't seen it for regular vehicles. Pennzoil/Shell are the FF and MOPAR oils so it is no big thing. Just was surprised to see it.

Now for the head shakers...

No recommended change interval for ATF? Not a chance on a vehicle I own. No such thing as lifetime fluid. No fluid spec or maintenance for the t-case( PTU )and rear diff given either. How can it not use fluid of some type? Fluid needs to be serviced

Looks like the tranny is like the JGC's. A sealed unit with "lifetime" fluid.

Maybe they are trying to say that lifetime is only 50, 000 miles

Re: Maintenance

That is odd. I was reading through the OM the other day and it talked about checking the fluids after driving through deep water. How are you supposed to do that if there is no dipstick or other way to get to the fluid?

Oh, just trust the engineers! It worked so well for the BMW (mc) rear ends!

Ha ha!

Re: Maintenance

Thanks for the owner's manual link. The thing would be 1/3 as thick if they left out the lawyer-written stuff.

The fluids can still be changed, using a hand-operated or electric vacuum pump. I use cheap disposable turkey basters (different one for each fluid type!) to extract power steering fluid and brake fluid every now and then, putting in fresh fluids.
