Mileage range indicator

i am trying to understand how the mileage range indicator is calculated. For example: I filled the tank and the range shows 278 miles. By my math, a full tank is 15.8 gals and the rated avg city/ highway mph is 24. 15.8 gals times 24 mpg is a range of 379 miles, not the 279 my display shows.. I reset all the average mpg settings after filling up.
Model is 2015 Cherokee sport 4x4
Thanks

Re: Mileage range indicator

Take approximately 2 gallons off for low range warning first. But it seems to be calculated in near real time.

Could it be based on your current average mpg? Were you getting about 17.7 mpg at the time?

Re: Mileage range indicator

It's possible that the current average mpg was around 17.7. Using that number times 15.8 gallons on a full tank would equate to the 278 mile range that was displayed after filling . I did reset all mpg averages after filling so you would think jeep would use the rated average of 24 mpg and then adjust the range in real time...but no. More than anything , I am just curious how it works.

Re: Mileage range indicator

People with WK2's on the forum have stated that the average is based only on the last 300 miles of driving. If true, I'd have to imagine it would be the same on the Cherokee. So even though you're resetting the trip odometers it's still retaining that info in memory as a starting point for the estimated range on your next full tank.

Right. And I believe the mpg factor adjusts continually while driving to predict the best estimate for range.

Re: Mileage range indicator

The mileage does recompute in real time based on your real time mpg.
For an example last week I was at 19.5 mpg around town.
Went 22 miles on the highway and my range actually increased a bit and then stayed the same as when I departed, till I arrived at my destination.

Re: Mileage range indicator

Thanks to all that offered an answer to my question. It seems certain that the mileage range is adjusted in real time. What is not certain is how the range gets set on fill up. There is no basis of fact that jeep stores the last 300 mpg average to set the initial range at fill up. It's illogical to use the last 300 miles since those miles may have been all stop and go city driving with low average mpg. It would seem more reasonable for jeep to use the stated city/ highway average ( ie 24 mpg for my jeep) to set the initial range at fill up and change the range based on real time mpg average .
I guess only jeep knows...lol

Re: Mileage range indicator

I've noticed that upon fill-up and resetting of the mileage and MPG that the MPG starts out at 20.5 MPG. My thought is that the range is based upon that real time MPG. As the MPG increases so does the range, to a certain point.

Just my $.02 worth

Re: Mileage range indicator

if you reset it will still calculate from your last average therefore it does adjust on the fly you will notice the distance to empty does not change on a longer cruising trip until it catches up with itself. around town you wouldnt notice it as much.
